GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the School Principal, this position will provide assistance as either a School Crossing Guard and/or Cafeteria Host with shared responsibilities by providing support to the educational process with specific responsibilities for ensuring the safety and welfare of students during classroom and non-classroom activities, minimizing the frequency and/or severity of harmful incidents, and communicating observations and/or incidents that have a potential impact on the general well-being of students, school personnel, and/or visitors.

The School Crossing Guard assists in the control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at an assigned location for a prescribed period of time to ensure the safety of school children, the safe, orderly flow of vehicular traffic, and perform related work as required. This job will require individuals to perform traffic control procedures on/off school property on roadways with potentially heavy, complicated and intense motor vehicle right of way.

The Cafeteria Host is responsible for monitoring students’ behavior and facilitating the orderly progression of students through the cafeteria and the clean-up of the eating area during the lunch period.

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Crossing Guard duties before and after school

  • Gives clear, concise hand signals to stop vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic to prevent movement of vehicular traffic until all pedestrians have completely crossed the street.
  • Makes sure signals are understood and obeyed before moving either vehicular or pedestrian traffic to ensure school children cross only at proper and designated locations.
  • Notes any present or potential traffic hazards and report it to the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible.
  • Report any vehicle code violations and write reports as necessary.
  • Attends appropriate training sessions/meetings as requested or required by immediate supervisor, Sheriff’s Office or Safety & Security Office.
  • Enforce school rules and regulations.
  • Reports students and/or pedestrians who do not adhere to safe street crossing procedures to his/her immediate supervisor.

Cafeteria Host duties

  • Assist with the orderly progression of students through the cafeteria lines and seating at the appropriate tables.
  • Monitor students’ behavior.
  • Facilitate the movement of students through the cafeteria in an orderly and appropriate manner.
  • Assist students with their lunches, if required, i.e., opening milk cartons, collecting appropriate utensils, etc.
  • Clean up spills and dropped food, as required, to maintain a safe environment.
  • Assist with the cleaning of tables and the sweeping of the floors following the lunch period.

Safety Monitor duties

  • Ensures that students, employees, and visitors are aware of the district's on-site safety policies and its potential consequences for violations.
  • Reports incidents, surveys student behavior, and visually scans various areas for the purpose of ensuring students, staff and building are in compliance with established regulations and maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides direction, control and supervision by escorting students, assigned personnel, and/or guests to offices and/or special locations.
  • In order to provide administrative visibility, accountability and protection by keeping a close eye on the school's facilities, approach outsiders, and point them in the right direction.
  • Monitors student behavior in various settings during and between assigned periods and checks facilities (e.g. restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, school grounds, parking lot, etc.) consistently for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be certified by the Sheriff’s Office to conduct Crossing Guard duties

  • For Crossing Guard: Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic through arm and hand signals, after training by the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and the Stafford County Public Schools’ Safety & Security Office, use hand-held stop sign, reflector vest, cones, whistle, gloves and communication equipment, and judge traffic flow, speed and direction of travel and group pedestrians in a logical manner
  • For Cafeteria Host: Child Development and behavior management techniques and supervise children in the absence of a supervisor

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment can be indoors and outdoors with regular exposure to weather conditions in the proximity to the roadway near moving mechanical parts and traffic, with moderate noise, temperatures that may be extreme hot/cold, and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
  • The work is light work, requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
  • The following physical and mental abilities are representative of those expected to complete the essential functions of the job: standing for prolonged periods; sitting for prolonged periods; moving the hands, wrists, or fingers repetitively; moving with force on the back or lower body repetitively; feeling, grasping, or holding objects by hand; identifying colors visually; identifying objects in low light or distant conditions; communicating via spoken language; communicating via written language; perceiving sounds; making decisions using logic and rational thinking.
