Job Description

Scaffold / Insulation / Painting Mechanic

Scaffolding Responsibilities:

  • Examines, selects and gathers materials and tools.
  • Examines blue prints and specifications to determine dimensions of structure.
  • Inspect base surface for obstructions.
  • Loads, transports and unloads material.
  • Measures boards, timbers, or plywood, using square, measuring tape, and ruler, and marks cutting lines on materials using pencil and scriber.
  • Saws boards and plywood panels to required sizes.
  • Uses carpentry hand tools such as hammers, levels, squares, screw drivers, adjustable wrenches, hand and power saws, drill motors and pry bars.
  • Assembles scaffold containing handrails, mid rails, braces and planks, toe boards, screening, locking pins and wheels to job specifications.
  • Braces forms in place with timbers, tie rods, and anchor bolts for use in building concrete piers, footings, and walls.
  • Secures scaffolding to permanent structure by tying.
  • Erects scaffolding for buildings and other structures and installs ladders, handrails,

walkways, platforms, and gangways.

  • Sets and braces anchor bolts.
  • May rig materials.
  • Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities on tolls and equipment.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules.

Insulation Responsibilities:

  • Measure and cut insulation for covering surfaces, using tape measures, handsaws, knives, and scissors.
  • Remove or seal off old insulation, following safety procedures.
  • Fit insulation around obstructions, and shape insulating materials and protective coverings as required.
  • Determine the amounts and types of insulation needed, and methods of installation, based on factors such as location, surface shape, and equipment use.
  • Install sheet metal around insulated pipes with screws in order to protect the insulation from weather conditions or physical damage.
  • Apply, remove, and repair insulation, thermal and fire, on industrial and domestic equipment, pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems such as heat exchangers, tanks, pipework and vessels, to help control noise and maintain temperatures.
  • Select appropriate insulation, thermal and fire, such as mineral wool, fiberglass, foams or other materials based on the heat retaining or excluding characteristics of the material.
  • Read blueprints and specifications to determine job requirements.
  • Cover, seal, or finish insulated surfaces or access holes with covers of metallic or nonmetallic, canvas strips, sealants, tape, cement or asphalt mastic.
  • Working with tools and machinery used in the trade.

Painting Responsibilities:

  • Apply paint, varnish, and other finishes to walls, ceilings, and other surfaces with brushes, rollers, and spray machines.
  • Prepare the surfaces to receive the coatings by cleaning the dirt, oil, and grease from the surfaces to be covered, removing old paint and wall coverings, cracks and holes are filled and smoothed over.
  • Must know what materials were used to make the paint and which types of paints are required for different materials, such as plaster, wood, brick, and metal.
  • Must have a good eye for color to mix and match paints.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules. Performs other duties as required.

Working Conditions:

  • Able and willing to work in inclement weather conditions
  • On Call
  • Willing to work evenings, weekends and extended hours as required by the workload

QUALIFICATIONS

May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
