The Assistant Head Nurse - Pediatric Oncology/Hematology (AHN) is a member of an extensive multidisciplinary team for the Pediatric Oncology/Hematology Unit (4E3) which is responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care on our 14 bed oncology/hematology unit. The staff on 4E3 provide care to patients with a variety of oncological and hematological diagnosis. The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) is a resource for frontline staff, participates in staff, participates in staff development and evaluation, and ensures the delivery of high quality safe patient care. Additional responsibilities include taking a proactive approach to resource management, actively working on discharge coordination and utilizing a Family-Centred Care perspective to plain and link with other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the day-to-day needs of patients on the unit are met.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum 3-5 years recent pediatric oncology/hematology acute care experience. APHON certification. Excellent communication and documentation skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team in a busy, demanding environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in a charge role capacity preferred. Demonstrated skills to teach/support and mentor staff. Demonstrated commitment to Quality Improvement initiatives, patient flow, and appropriate resource allocation.
