JOB DUTIES:

UW SYSTEM OFFICIAL TITLE: HVAC Mechanic

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

Under the general supervision of the Building and Grounds Superintendent, the primary responsibilities of this position include the performance of HVAC preventative maintenance and HVAC equipment operation. This includes investigating, resolving, and responding to trouble calls and complaints. This position will also maintain the proper operation of heating and cooling distribution systems, ensure proper operations of HVAC instruments and controls, coordinate work with perform work on various other projects.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Monitors, tests, maintains, and repairs Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, related equipment, and controls according to established policies and procedures
  • Performs scheduled preventative and routine maintenance and documents activity on equipment and systems to ensure optimal and safe operation
  • Inspect, clean, lubricate and repair or replace belts, bearings, shafts, impellers and drive motors
  • Receives, prioritizes, and responds to service requests according to established timelines and policies
  • Works with established vendors/suppliers to obtain necessary work and parts to keep campus HVAC equipment operational
  • Maintains proper operation of all heating and cooling distributions systems on campus
  • Maintains ductwork, steam traps, heat exchangers piping and insulation on campus
  • Repairs leaks and any mechanical problems in the HVAC pipework, valves and other distribution equipment around campus
  • Checks and balances air volumes
  • Identifies, prioritizes, troubleshoots, and escalates system problems, equipment malfunctions, and repair needs
  • Understand and be able to operate the energy management control system
  • Performs all keyboard control functions, edits and program changes
  • Maintains scheduling of all building functions, occupied and unoccupied programming on a back-up basis to main scheduler
  • Uses Campus Energy Management System to monitor/ troubleshoot campus HVAC equipment
  • Works with Campus Energy Management authorized vendor to troubleshoot and repair issues with the campus system
  • Installs or relocates new ductwork, dampers, grills, coils, piping and controls, as needed for campus projects
  • Develops and schedules operational work plans for staff occasionally

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma and 4 years of extensive mechanical experience in the operation and repair of HVAC equipment or Associates degree in HVAC or similar field at time of application
  • Working knowledge of computerized HVAC systems as well as mechanical systems
  • Experience with troubleshooting, monitoring and resolving malfunctioning or unsafe conditions in Mechanical equipment 
  • Completed safety training with experience in recognizing occupational hazards and working with proven safety techniques in the maintenance and use of building mechanical systems
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a valid Wisconsin driver's license upon appointment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5 years in the HVAC field

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Physical strength and stamina to perform required work, including being able to bend, kneel/crawl over duct work or equipment, climb up and down ladders, lift loads up to 30 lbs. and work on your feet for long periods of time

SPECIAL NOTES:

Occasional evening and weekend work may occur for this position depending on campus emergency mechanical needs. Work duties will require the incumbent to be outside in various temperatures and conditions such as rain, wind, snow and freezing or hot temperatures. Work duties may be stressful and have imminent deadlines. Areas of work may include high frequency noise and hot temperatures in mechanical spaces.

Position is a full-time University Staff appointment. The work hours for this position will be 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. 

A criminal conviction investigation and pre-work screen examination will be conducted on the finalist(s). A six-month probationary period is required for this position. SALARY INFORMATION

Minimum salary of $26.00. 

This position will earn an additional $0.60 per hour for all weekend hours worked and an additional $0.45 per hour for all hours worked between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This position is not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

BENEFIT DETAILS

In addition, employees receive several types of paid leave benefits, which are prorated for employees working less than 100%. This includes 9 legal holidays, 36 hours of personal holiday and between 96-130 hours of sick leave annually. Employees earn 13-27 days of vacation each year, depending on years of service and employment type.
