He angitūtanga: The opportunity

“Whāngai ka tupu ka puāwai”

That which is nurtured, blossoms then grows.

Are you ready to take the next step in your career? Whakapuāwai is Auckland Council’s two-year Development Programme for Policy Advisors, helping us build a pipeline of talent to drive forward council’s interesting and varied public policy and strategy work.

Learn about the causes and consequences of some of the complex challenges facing Aotearoa’s biggest city – like the social impacts of climate change, intensification, population growth and inequality – and what we can do to respond. Work on ways to unleash Auckland’s potential: through arts and events, stunning open spaces, celebration of culture and community connection.

Apply your critical thinking skills to real projects alongside experienced kaimahi who’ll support you to develop your skills, knowledge and confidence. Support and lead work that delivers high quality policy advice to decision-makers.

Enjoy engaging and connecting with Auckland’s diverse communities and navigating the political environment, and get satisfaction from analysis, problem solving and developing evidence-based solutions. Participate in initiatives to embed te ao Māori into the way we do things.

Embrace this opportunity to join us and improve the lives of Aucklanders!

He kōrero mōu: About you

Tertiary qualified in public policy, social sciences or arts, economics, law, public health, environmental sciences, or another related field, we are looking for people who are curious, open-minded, adaptable and willing to learn.

Your career history may have seen you working in a policy development, research, analyst, advisor or planner role for central/local government, an iwi or cultural organisation, consultancy or in the not-for-profit sector, where you have developed a good understanding of the issues facing cities and communities. We know not everyone follows the same pathway into public service. So if you feel stronger in some areas than others, we would welcome your application.

Your core skills are:

  • the ability to think critically and strategically
  • strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • the ability to articulate yourself effectively and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

You also have lots of initiative and are able to effectively organise and manage your work commitments to meet project objectives and deadlines.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

Whakapuāwai provides a unique opportunity for you to further develop your knowledge and skills in policy development.

Our mahi covers the full policy cycle and a range of disciplines including:

  • commissioning and scoping projects
  • research and discovery work
  • engagement with Auckland’s diverse communities and stakeholders
  • developing policy and regulatory options
  • preparing analysis and advice for elected members
  • evaluating the real-world impacts of council decisions.

Through this accelerated programme you’ll have the opportunities and support to grow as a policy specialist or future leader within Auckland Council and beyond.

You’ll be supported every step of the way by a team who enjoy working flexibly, and who want you to succeed. And you will feel immense satisfaction from seeing the direct impact that your work has on delivering positive change in our communities.
