Job Summary

Under supervision, represent the branch laboratory for contract work with vendors or contractors, reviews contracts, review finished work and provide written or oral report on the outcome of the contract to the Branch Chief. Ensure functioning of utilities in the branch and maintain knowledge of the blueprint of the building including emergency valves for gas, plumbing and main switches for electric power. Initiate and perform regular inspections on physical facility and on electrical and mechanical equipment in order to prevent/minimize breakdown, malfunction or deterioration; Report to Branch Chief in case of malfunction of such equipment and take corrective and preventive steps utilizing guidelines and procedures. Keep up to date documentation on all physical/maintenance activities of the laboratory building including description of task, date and person who performed the task, etc. Perform repair work on electrical systems, plumbing and other building utilities or call-in contract company for major repair work. Maintain paperwork, blueprints, codes, and work orders related to these tasks. Perform equipment maintenance activities to include communicating with Branch Chief/System-wide Equipment Facilities Manager and vendors using established purchasing procedures to supply parts and materials for use in maintenance activities and in compliance with contracts, blankets, and vendor agreements, ensuring adequate replacement parts and service components are available for continuous operation. Perform a full range of cleaning tasks to include sweeping, mopping, waxing, cleaning, dusting and/or polish floors, stairs, hallways, corridors, walks, moldings, outside steps terraces, windowsills, and other designated areas to fill in during absence of custodian. Perform other related duties.

  • This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.
  • Per the terms and agreements of the department’s contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information.
  • Upon completion of a background check and appropriate training, must participate in the select agent program.
  • Due to the nature of the essential responsibilities, this position is not eligible for remote work.
  • Valid CA Driver License
  • This position is subject to UCD’s vaccination program (Influenza, SARS-CoV-2, is/might subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies), and Medical/Health Surveillance Program/Procedures/Review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Work Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:00am – 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period)
  • Work flexible schedule/overtime as needed to complete projects and meet deadlines.
  • Mandatory after-hours emergency contact, weekend and holiday rotations as needed.
  • Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. Outbreaks, Fiscal Close, Audits Periods, etc.)
  • Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Extensive experience in general building maintenance and inspection of heating, steam ventilating, HVAC, and similar mechanical equipment.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of operations of mechanical electrical and electronic devices, and be able to perform trouble shooting of same.
  • Knowledge to read and understand technical data and to review blueprints and specifications.
  • Knowledge to manage and monitor and conduct cost-effective ordering and use of laboratory/maintenance and/or office supplies and equipment.
  • Knowledge to dispose of hazardous and contaminated materials in a safe manner and in accordance with campus and EH&S policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge to maintain tools and equipment in a workable clean and organized manner.
  • Knowledge and skills in the application and operation of the equipment, tools, or material to a particular maintenance or custodial assignment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred License/Certification:

  • A California license for performing commercial electrical work or any other task which requires state code specifications.
  • A California license for performing commercial HVAC maintenance or repair.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
