DESCRIPTION

The Rady School of Management provides business education through its PhD program, Masters degree programs, undergraduate minors and courses, and executive business seminars. In addition to these educational programs, the Rady School includes the Beyster Institute, the California Institute of Innovation and Development, and the US Israel Center. Our values are excellence, integrity, collaboration, and innovation. The School has a fast-paced, high energy atmosphere where staff participation and teamwork are highly valued.

This position is at the Rady School of Management a building that we all take pride in. Day porters/custodians are an important part of providing an appealing, safe, clean facility for the staff who work in the building and for students who learn in the building. Staff and students appreciate the work of day porters/custodians, and many staff and students know the Rady School day porters/custodians by name.

The Day Porter/Sr. Custodian position is an unusual combination of daily custodian duties, daily arrangement of meeting room furniture, frequent interaction with people in the building, taking care of last-minute custodian needs that occur unexpectedly in a building occupied by 200-500 people each day. The position is located at the Rady School of Management a large, clean, modern building consisting of classrooms, restrooms, break room/kitchen areas, meeting spaces, offices, an auditorium, interior and exterior hallways, stairwells, elevators, and courtyards.

This position has a lot of variety in a busy building. In addition to routine custodian/housekeeping cleaning responsibilities for our 5 story this position rearranges lightweight furniture for daily meetings and events in our conference rooms. Most of the meeting room tables and chairs are on wheels and this Sr. Day Porter/Custodian position rearranges the furniture daily according to diagrams and instructions for each meeting.

Each evening and on the weekends, this position cleans a large room after our students have eaten lunch/dinner. Tasks include removing trash and recycling, sweeping and mopping, wiping down tables and repositioning chairs and tables. Additional duties include cleaning restrooms, sinks, toilets, and table tops and kitchen counters; cleaning interior spaces such as classrooms and large meeting rooms; mopping sweeping & vacuuming carpet; shampooing carpet and emptying trash, cleaning glass doors & windows. The position also cleans/disinfects offices/classrooms/conference rooms/work rooms/kitchens, furniture, and appliances; may sweep/power wash outside patios/decks/outdoor furniture, and any other duties related to maintaining the cleanliness of the Rady School, inside and out.

The position also occasionally performs minor repair and maintenance of building & equipment (changing light bulbs, tightening doorknobs, replacing batteries in auto flushers/toilets) and occasionally assembles and disassembles office furniture such as desks, bookcases, and workstations.

This position requires flexibility and the ability to respond quickly to ongoing interruptions throughout the shift. This is an active building with hundreds of students in it each day. Rady Porters respond on an ongoing basis throughout the shift to unexpected spills, rearrangement of meeting rooms, restroom issues, etc. The position interacts and speaks with staff, faculty, students and guests (directing visitors, responding to requests). Positive interaction with staff, faculty, students, and guests is required.

Work is done while the Rady School buildings are fully operational, must be able to work in front of others, with frequent interruptions, adjusting tasks according to occupancy of building, unexpected/last minute changes in meeting room/furniture needs, arrival of furniture needing to be assembled, etc.
