Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire a highly organized and detail-oriented Licensed Registered Nurse, Corrections Nurse Trainee. This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care to individuals in a correctional facility. The successful candidate shall demonstrate a valid Illinois License and good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments pursuant to the direction of medical personnel in a correctional setting.

Essential Functions

1. Performs on-the-job training in a variety of nursing care functions, such as administering medications, monitoring vital signs and examining individuals in custody utilizing nursing assessment skills and techniques. 

2. Receives formal training on how to assess patient progress.

3. Receives hands-on training in proper procedures to set up, operate and monitor special equipment, such as respirators, and suction devices, AED, oxygen.

4. Receives extensive on-the-job training in:

  • Maintaining security of medical equipment and supplies.
  • Conducting surveillance of medical unit surroundings and individuals in custody for possession of contraband and illegal drugs.
  • Preparing reports on infractions of the facility’s security rules and regulations.
  • Receives comprehensive training on procedures used to inspect food services areas and individual in custody housing units for safety and sanitation, conducts Restrictive Housing evaluations, and documents completion and findings of inspections and evaluations.

5. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

2. Requires licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Prefers at least one (1) year of nursing experience in a correctional setting.

2. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working in mental health.

3. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience problem solving in a nursing position.

4. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working on an interdisciplinary team.

5. Prefers at least one (1) year of working experience in a leadership role.

Conditions of Employment

1. Requires current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.

2. Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.

3. Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
