SUMMARY OF WORK:

The Drinking Water Program in the Division works with Public Water Systems (PWS) in North Dakota to ensure that drinking water meets all enforceable standards established under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This is accomplished by monitoring for contaminants, providing operator training and certification, conducting inspections, ensuring proper design of upgraded/new facilities, and providing compliance/technical assistance. The Drinking Water Program also administers the state’s Fluoridation Program and provides technical assistance to private water systems. 

As an Environmental Scientist in the Drinking Water Program, you will be responsible for conducting inspections of drinking water and wastewater facilities which will require seasonal travel and overnights, preparing and delivering presentations at operator trainings and conferences to drinking water and wastewater operators, sample public water systems for regulated and unregulated contaminants, provide assistance to public and private water systems, assisting other drinking water and wastewater initiatives, assisting the Operator Certification Program; and assisting with database entry for Spring Training Registrations and Operator Certification Program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. DEQ will not provide sponsorships.

DEQ is attempting to fill this position at the Environmental Scientist II level but reserves the right to underfill the position as an Environmental Scientist I. 

To be considered for an Environmental Scientist II, you must have a bachelor’s degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, or environmental science and two years of related experience. DEQ Hiring Range – Environmental Scientist II is $4,971 / month.

To be considered for an Environmental Scientist I, you must have a bachelor’s degree in natural or physical science with emphasis in biology, chemistry, microbiology, or environmental science. DEQ Hiring Range – Environmental Scientist I is $4,163 / month.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference will be given to applicants that have experience is wastewater collection/treatment, drinking water treatment/distribution, and teaching.
