Position Summary

The Regional Director of Planned Giving reports to the Executive Director in the Office of Planned Giving and is responsible for qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding high level prospects capable of making major planned gifts to Washington University. Travel is required.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage university planned and deferred gift activity including qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of 80 donors and prospects in an assigned geographic region and/or specific school, program or initiatives. In addition to planned giving activities, assist in major and principal gift solicitations.
  • Become, and stay well versed on, the mission, projects, and prospects for a specific school and university-wide initiatives and serve as the Office of Planned Giving’s liaison to a minimum of two schools or programs.
  • Assist Regional and School teams with planned giving activity and presentations. Serve as a resource for all university development staff in preparation of cultivation and solicitation strategies for all planned giving, including major gifts, as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the legal and procedural requirements associated with planned gifts, or related experience.
  • At least five years of major gift and/or planned giving experience, preferably in a higher education environment.
  • Deep appreciation for and an ability to successfully articulate the mission and aspirations of Washington University. Desire to play a meaningful role in the University’s community and to share in the community’s commitment to research and education.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement effective cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for individual giving.
  • Ability to work successfully with administration, faculty, and volunteers as appropriate to secure gifts for the University and its various schools and programs.
  • Desire and ambition to work in an organization that is evolving at an accelerated pace.
  • Ability to listen carefully, learn quickly and work effectively in a complex organization.
  • Superior communication skills: the ability to speak credibly about higher education and the aspirations of Washington University; clarity, crispness, and effectiveness in written and oral presentation.
  • Superior interpersonal skills: demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with high-net-worth individuals.
  • Desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across development offices.
  • Ability to effectively work with staff and available budget resources; an approach to the planned giving officer role that brings out the best in people and yields pride, ownership, and a sense of team effort. 
  • Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, and perspective; a very strong work ethic, supported by commitment and follow through.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years of related experience.

G15

Salary Range

$82,500.00 - $145,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
