Job Description
IST717: Management of academic, public, and special libraries. Relationship between library and its parent institution; internal organization and operation; library information policies; library financing; legislation affecting libraries. Management roles require librarians to have a special ability set including planning, organizational, decision-making, leadership, interpersonal, budgetary, and other skills. This course seeks to provide students with knowledge and experiences that will prepare them to apply these skills in a variety of library contexts.
After taking this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify classic and current library leadership and management trends in various library types.
2. Inventory, interrogate, and internalize professional (skills, values, ethics, policies, and frameworks) associated with leadership and management of people and projects in library and information contexts.
3. Articulate and reflect upon a personal and professional philosophy of library leadership and management.
4. Formulate action-based plans on principles of equity, justice, cultural responsiveness, empathy, and engagement as integral to leadership and management in libraries.
5. Analyze and probe the development of leadership/management decisions using theory, principles, evidence, critical and creative thinking, and ethical frameworks.
6. Demonstrate elements of leadership and management through engagement of communities, and colleagues ethically, responsively, respectfully, empathetically, and with humility.
7. Value professional and collegial communication with peers and library professionals; and participate rigorously as a class member, teammate, and leader.
QualificationsMS in Library Science or Information Science and at least 2 years of experience in a library leadership position. Experience with a variety of library types preferred.

Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be prepared to serve as instructor and mentor and be willing to work with the Professor of Record, Program Director, and other instructors teaching this class. This course has a developed syllabus, exercises, and texts, however, we seek individuals who can bring their own experiences to the course.
