Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response UN-SPIDER office, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in Vienna, Austria. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Scientific Affairs Officer and Head of UN-SPIDER Vienna. The UN-SPIDER programme is focusing on being a gateway to space information for disaster management support, by serving as a bridge to connect the disaster management, risk management and space communities and by being a facilitator of capacity-building and institutional strengthening, in particular for developing countries. UN-SPIDER is being implemented with the support of an open network of providers of space-based solutions to support disaster management activities. Besides Vienna (where UNOOSA is located), the programme also has an office in Bonn Germany as well as an office in Beijing, China. For more information on UNOOSA, please visit: www.unoosa.org. Daily responsibilities will largely depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Support the handling and processing of geospatial data and satellite imagery. • Provide support to the team in organising UN-SPIDER Conferences, workshops and trainings. • Support administrative or legal enquiries from client organizations and facilitate UN-SPIDER advisory functions. • Specific duties such as handling registration forms, sorting out registration lists, preparing invitation letters, communicating with the participants on logistics and other issues and assisting in facilitating visa application. • Provide assistance in formatting the documents such as information notes, agenda, background notes, brochures, badges etc. • Outreach Assistance and support with social media campaigns and promotional activities.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). • Be computer literate in standard software applications; proficiency in preparing spreadsheets; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
