The Office of the Dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences is looking to fill an inaugural position: Director of Content and Creative Services. Delivering that content brings the Arts & Sciences priorities to life via creative storytelling of A&S initiatives, accomplishments and research across all channels to engage our core audiences. They will work closely with the other Directors on the Marketing leadership team and will be closely aligned with the strategic objectives of Arts & Sciences. 

This role will oversee an existing team of content creators (newsletter, website), and will be responsible for growing this team in numbers to include more content creators and creative services. This individual will report to the Senior Associate Dean and Chief Marketing Officer. 

Specifically, they will have ownership of the following: 

  • Build and lead our content capabilities to create compelling content that reflects Arts & Science’s voice and resonates with the audiences 
  • Own all aspects of content creation, including owned digital assets such as website and newsletter, and any future state of content 
  • Delivering overall marketing and brand strategy through content creation 
  • Implementing brand identity across all touchpoints and developing materials to support 
  • Manage a team of two direct reports (Director of Digital Communications and Editorial Director) and their subsequent direct reports, with opportunity to immediately build out the team further 
  • Lead the delivery evolution from traditional content to more dynamic and modern content and engagement 
  • Manage content workflow based on an understanding of production timelines 
  • Establish an editorial structure and editorial calendar to guide content creation and distribution across channels 
  • Define content plans based on trends, audience insights, and data, and lead execution of content initiatives from ideation through design and creation 
  • Partner with other Directors to revamp existing newsletter and other assets 
  • Partner with other Directors to establish new vehicles of communication, including but not limited to: podcast, video series/live interviews and webinars 
  • Partner with other Directors to counsel senior leadership on strategies, initiatives and materials to amplify key priorities 
  • In coordination with other members of the Marketing team, be astute to the broader community and ensure that messages are amplified in an appropriate way and tone 
  • Develop and recommend results-based process improvements and optimized communication channels, tools, and strategies and be able to pivot and lead team through change management 
  • Identify and recommend new content opportunities, supported by data and insights 
  • Coordinate closely with marketing and internal communications teams to ensure campaign messaging and collateral are on-brand 

Minimum Requirements: 

Education: Bachelor's degree 

Experience: At least eight years, or Master's degree with at least six years of marketing, journalism, or public relations experience. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed capacity across Arts & Sciences, the University, and broader audiences 
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with ability to synthesize complex concepts and translate into simple and clear communications and campaigns 
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire others and affect change 
  • Experience implementing a successful strategic marketing plan based on goals and priorities 
  • Proven track record creating and delivering effective content that translate strategic thinking into output 
  • Strong knowledge of best-in-class content practices and delivery 
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills and strong problem solving capabilities 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Experience managing and developing a team 
  • Advanced Degree may substitute for some of the experience requirement 

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA. A hybrid work schedule may be available, dependent upon the needs of the department and the incumbent's performance.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
