JOB TITLE: Scrub Technician PRN

DEPARTMENT: Surgical Services

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

TITLE OF SUPERVISOR: Administrator

Job Summary:

The PRN scrub technician under supervision of OR nurses/physician is directly involved with the instrumentation and technical aspects of the surgical procedure. 

Job Qualifications:

Education: High School diploma/Associates degree preferred.

Experience: Two years OR experience.

Certification: Surgical technology preferred/BLS required.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Strengths:

Position requires ability to regularly lift and/or move objects up to 20 lbs., frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs.

  1. Manual Dexterity:

Position requires incumbent to perform simple motor skills such as standing, walking, etc., or simple manipulative skills. 

  1. Coordination:

Position requires incumbents to frequently perform gross body coordination such as walking, stooping, filing, etc., and/or tasks which require hand-eye coordination. 

  1. Mobility:

Position requires incumbent to constantly walk, stand, and/or sit for prolonged periods. 

  1. Visual Discrimination:

Specific vision abilities require close vision, distance vision, color vision,

peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Mental Requirements:

  1. Concentration:

Position requires ability to frequently concentrate on moderate/fine detail with some/constant interruption.

  1. Attention Span

Position requires ability to constantly attend to a task or function for 20-60 minutes at a time.

  1. Conceptualization:

Position requires ability to frequently understand and relate to specific ideas/concepts. 

  1. Memory:

Position requires ability to constantly remember task/assignment for full shift every day.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Job Duties:

The following descriptions of job responsibilities and standards are intended to reflect the major responsibilities and duties of the job, but is not intended to describe minor duties or other responsibilities assigned from time to time.

  1. Maintain surgical instruments by frequent cleaning, proper handling and storage 

to prevent damage and report when in need of repair. 

  1. Prepare sterile supplies for surgical cases, including assembling supplies and 

opening sterile supplies for cases.

  1. Prepare sterile instruments, sutures, medications, and equipment for surgery. 
  2. Assist surgeon by anticipating his needs for instrument, sutures, medications, 

and equipment. 

  1. Maintain aseptic technique at all times. Observe for any break in technique, reporting it immediately. Care properly for contaminated items. 
  2. Observe patient during surgery for signs of complications 
  3. Assists in preparation of room prior to surgery, during room turnover and at the

end of the day. 

  1. Implements care in accordance with the physician orders.
  2. Properly operates autoclaves and ultrasound equipment.
  3. Demonstrates complete knowledge of infection control and universal precautions,

actively supports and promotes strict adherence to policies and procedures as

outlined in the departmental manuals.

  1. Maintains an effective rapport with physicians, patients, family and staff 

members.

  1. Monitors levels of inventory in accordance with desired quantities. 
  2. Participates in economical utilization of supplies and medication.
  3. Assists in the orientation of new employees.
  4. Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings.
  5. Ensures individual skills are current by attending relevant educational programs.
  6. Participates in departmental fire and disaster drills.
  7. Assists in the identification of patient-related potential problem areas for referral

for quality review.

  1. Attends departmental meetings and in-service education and shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education.
  2. Always provides proper notification and advance notice for absence or tardiness.
  3. Observes the dress code.
