Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Administrator, the Pre-Admission Nurse performs a verbal assessment with the patient prior to admission via a phone interview as well as collects the patient’s medical history from previous medical records. The nurse also works closely with the anesthesia department in coordinating the patient’s needs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Assesses patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures.
  2. Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care.
  3. Implements the plan of care by:
  4. Performing interventions necessary to ensure that the patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side and level;
  5. Communicating the patient’s current status to the appropriate parties throughout the continuum of care;
  6. Assessing the knowledge level of the patient or designated support person;
  7. Providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure;
  8. Actively involving the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his or her perioperative place of care and rehabilitation process;
  9. Protecting the patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy;
  10. Providing culturally and age appropriate, ethical care within legal standards of practice; and
  11. Providing consistent and comparable care regardless of the setting.
  12. Evaluates the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes.
  13. Transfers care as appropriate.
  14. Delegates tasks as appropriate according to the state Nurse Practice Act.
  15. Documents nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
  16. Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as appropriate.
  17. Participates in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement projects.
  18. Participates in Infection Prevention and Control activities.
  19. Participates in the performance appraisal process.
  20. Uses problem solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
  21. Maintains required competencies.
  22. Pursues professional growth and continued learning.
  23. Acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of all appropriate information.

Education/Licensure/Certification – required:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse License
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Qualifications – Preferred:

  • Two years perioperative services experience
  • Basic computer skills
  • Strong communication and organizational skills

  • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range
