Why does the job exist?

This position will perform scheduled routine inspections and document the results into the Fleet Management System. Position will work closely with the equipment manager to assess the needs of the equipment and the possibility of replacement.

How does it get done?

Incumbent will at times provide training and or instruction as to how to inspect equipment. The incumbent will perform minor repairs in the field and inspect new equipment before we take delivery at times equipment that has been repaired. Lastly, the incumbent must be available 24/7 to respond to emergency call outs on short notice.

Internal New Mexico Department of Transportation employees.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:

  • Inspecting heavy-duty equipment and light-duty vehicles,
  • Customer service, and
  • Working independently without supervision.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience driving, and/or maintaining, and/or performing routine inspections on automotive and/or heavy equipment, to include tractor trailers, gas and/or diesel engines with air brakes and hydraulic systems. Must possess a valid Driver's License and a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and must have or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year of hire. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work may also be performed in primarily an office setting to include working with computers, faxes, copiers and printers. Will be required to be on call for emergency call outs 24/7.Work is also performed in the field with exposure to noise, fumes, low and high liquid/air pressures, sparks, flames from welding and cutting torches, moving traffic and heavy equipment. Duties may include walking on hard and smooth surfaces and uneven ground. Exposure to inclement weather: rain, snow and blowing winds. Ability to use hand tools (manual and powered) such as: impact wrenches, drills, hydraulic presses, tire mounting machines and operation of trucks/heavy equipment.
