The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (Safety) will be directed by the Chief Psychiatrist and may receive clinical supervison from a Staff Psychiatrist at the Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:
In order to be considered for this job vacancy, you must satisfy one of the following requirements:
1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at Nurse Practitoner (Safety) EXAM BULLETIN, OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid license to practice as a professional registered nurse in the State of California and completion of the requirements for Nurse Practitioner as specified in the regulations of the Board of Registered Nursing, California Administrative Code, Title 16, Chapter 14, Article 8, Section 1482.
Section 1482 - Requirements for Certification As a Nurse Practitioner: (a) To obtain certification as a Nurse Practitioner, an applicant must hold a valid and active license as a registered nurse in California and possess a master's degree in nursing, a master's degree in a clinical field related to nursing, or a graduate degree in nursing and one of the following: (1) Successful completion of a nurse practitioner education program approved by the Board; (2) National certification as a nurse practitioner in one or more categories listed in Section 1481(a) from a national certification organization accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies or the American Board of Nursing Specialties. (b) A nurse who has not completed an academically affiliated nurse practiioner education program shall provide evidence of having completed equivalent education and supervised clinical practice, as set forth in this article. (c) Graduates who have completed a nurse practitioner education program in a foreign country shall meet the requirements as set forth in this article. The applicant shall submit the required credential evaluation through a board-approved evaluation service evidencing education equivalent to a master's or doctoral degree in Nursing.

IMPORTANT: The Medical Staff of the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero requires Nurse Practitioner (Safety) - Psychiatric candidates meet the Medical Staff criteria for privileging set forth in the facility Bylaws.
The Medical Staff requires proof of program completion (official transcripts and program completion certificate) in PMHNP and the NP must have their National Certification (from AANP or ANCC) before a start date can be established.
You MUST attach proof of completion of a certified psychiatric nurse practitioner program.
You MUST provide your current California RN license number on your application. Only applicants who have a Registered Nurse license free and clear of disciplinary action will be offered an interview.
