Safe positioning of patient. Provide visualization of the operative site during operative procedure. Assists surgeon in providing hemostasis. Assists with closure of body planes. Anticipates needs of surgeon.
Other duties may be assigned.
Assists with patient prepping and draping.
Handles tissue as directed by physician.
Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels as directed and supervised by the surgeon.
Provides exposure through use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques.
Sutures fascia, subcutaneous and completes skin closure under the direction of the surgeon.
Applies surgical dressing.
Displays competency for the Certified Surgical Scrub First Assist role as evidenced in the annual performance appraisal following the FHN PRIDE Standards.
Functions as a Surgical Technologist when opportunity for first assisting is not available or necessary for the surgical procedure.
Education: Graduate of a Certified Surgical Scrub Program, and Certified First Assist Program with 2-5 years of experience with 350 documented surgical cases.
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Certified Surgical Scrub, Certified First Assist., BLS certification required
