Job Summary

The Student Assistant will support the Eagle Academy on the Statesboro Campus beginning Fall 2024.

The Eagle Academy is an inclusive postsecondary education program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disability to build their academic, employment, self-determination, and independent living skills to prepare individuals for competitive, integrated employment and living as independently as possible. The Student Assistant will work as a peer mentor, academic mentor, and/or social mentor for students in the academy. Sometimes that may mean attending classes with program students to provide academic or social supports. Sometimes that may mean scheduling one-on-one tutoring/academic support sessions with program students. The Student Assistant may also communicate with faculty, program staff, and the individual students. There will also be training and meeting time with program staff.

Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.

Responsibilities

  • Attend scheduled hours.
  • Provide ethical academic and social supports to young adults with intellectual and developmental disability.
  • Communicate regularly with program staff and students.
  • Keep consistent record of hours worked and duties completed while working.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect for program students.

Shift Specifics

  • Up to 6 - 15 per week 
  • Flexible with schedule of availability
  • Shifts scheduled Monday - Friday, 8AM - 5PM
  • Some opportunities for evening and/or weekend time

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.

  • Background or experience in working with individuals with disabilities
  • Coaching or tutoring experience with students 

Proposed Salary

$8.00 per hour

This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.
