Reporting to the Head of Private Placements, the Private Placements Professional will work independently with limited direct supervision.

You are

A highly motivated individual with proven experience in a financial services organization evaluating private placement investment opportunities. You have a sound understanding of economics, finance and accounting. Ideally, you will have experience working within the life insurance industry and some understanding of the regulatory environment and capital needs and requirements of an insurance company.

You will

Underwrite new investments in private placement debt: Evaluate potential private placement debt opportunities, most of which will be investment grade. In the process, analyze company and industry data and, with the assistance of the law department, assess document issues. Prepare reports recommending whether or not a potential transaction provides a combination of credit strength, yield and covenant protection that will support Guardian’s goals for its various business divisions.

Manage existing investments in private placement debt: Manage a portfolio of private placement debt investments. Stay up to date on credit developments. Where possible, build relationships with borrowers. Prepare periodic reports assessing performance and credit quality. Assess amendments and other document changes requested from time to time by borrowers.

External networking, marketing, and business relationships: Assist in the process of maintaining good relationships with private placement agents and other potential deal sources. Network with private placement investment professionals at other institutions to keep abreast of market developments. Continually assess which sources of information on credit and business trends are essential.

Ad hoc projects: All investment professionals are encouraged to suggest improvements to current processes; sometimes this will entail working to implement the improvements. In addition, private placement professionals are asked from time to evaluate projects or work on adjacent investment matters of all sorts. Implement a disciplined and methodical approach to ensure management of several projects at the same time.

You have

  • Strong knowledge of financial principles and concepts underlying the underwriting and evaluation of private placement debt investments.
  • Quantitative skills and ability to apply these skills in deal analysis and portfolio maintenance.
  • MBA, CFA, CA, CPA and/or ACA qualifications preferred, though not required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to compose emails (internal & external) that are professional and unambiguous, summarize sophisticated or unwieldy information, listen carefully and take notes where appropriate, and provide responsive answers to questions.
  • Ability to manage time effectively in an active environment. This often requires an ongoing reshuffling of priorities, which in turn may require that colleagues are made aware of a shift in focus.
  • The willingness to ask for help from colleagues, and provide help to colleagues, when priorities collide.
  • Ability to work effectively across the organization, building relationships with members of the investment department and partners in the law department and elsewhere.
