Join our dynamic team as a Community Flood Resilience Engagement Team Member, an exciting and unique role dedicated to supporting the enhancement of community resilience and awareness regarding flood risks. Your primary responsibility will involve supporting Engagement Officers in collaborating with residents, public groups, businesses, and schools to develop and implement plans for mitigating flood impacts. Our community engagement team aims to ensure communities remain safe during emergencies.

Your role is varied and will encompass assisting in events, exercises, and administrative tasks, providing both operational and organisational support. The ideal candidate will thrive in diverse settings, confidently interact with the public, be proficient in event coordination, and be proactive within their assigned tasks.

While prior experience is not mandatory, a willingness to understand community engagement practices will be essential. Your duties will encompass diary management, logistical coordination, procurement of necessary materials, and organization of data and resources. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to contribute your innovative ideas and collaborate on initiatives to help the team continually improve.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team1 

You will be part of the Flood Resilience Team who lead the way in working to deliver community engagement with schools, communities and individuals effected by flood risk both now and in a changing climate. The team also manages our network of Flood Warden volunteers. You will also spend time with our Local Authority partners working closely with their FCRM and Resilience teams.

Experience/skills required1 

No formal qualifications are required, but you will be expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent team working skills.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Efficient with IT and Microsoft applications like Teams, Word, Notes and Outlook.
  • Effective writing and communication skills
  • Be able to prioritise your own workload and plan effectively.
  • Be self-motivated and strive for quality.
  • Good attention to detail.

With this in mind, we’re looking for enthusiastic and pro-active applicants who are willing to learn about the importance of community resilience, flood risk management and incident response. This roll is varied and interesting, both at the desk and working in public spaces, it will require good planning and organisation.

It will be advantageous to have experience of supporting community working. You’ll be able to describe to us how you have taken initiative to improve aspects of your work, you will also demonstrate good organisational skills and interpersonal skills .

Interviews will be face to face and are scheduled to take week commencing 20th May.

Applications will be “blind” assessed using your answers to the competency questions.

Base location will be in the North East. The team currently works together one day each week within Tyneside House and participates in face-to-face to meetings when appropriate, whilst at other times remote working is the norm.
