About the role:

The laboratory of Benoit Bruneau at the Gladstone Institutes (http://bruneaulab.gladstone.org) is searching for a Research Associate (RA) to help us study the regulation of genes during heart development, using mouse models in vivo and stem cells in vitro. We are looking for candidates who are strongly motivated, work well in a team, and who could start July-August 2024. There is a potential for one or two publications within a two-year time period. Candidates with plans for graduate school, medical school or dental school are encouraged to apply.

What you will do:

We are looking for a research associate whose primary role will focus on culturing induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) and performing molecular biology techniques to understand gene expression regulation during in vitro cardiac differentiation.

  • iPSC culture: maintain and expand iPSC lines, including routine passaging, freezing, and thawing of cells
  • Differentiation protocols: use differentiation protocols to generate cardiomyocytes, ensuring consistency and reproducibility, and checking differentiation efficiency by flow cytometry
  • Molecular biology techniques: perform molecular biology techniques such as PCR, RT-qPCR, and western blotting to analyze gene expression and protein levels
  • Use sequencing techniques such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and ATAC-seq to investigate gene regulation and epigenetic changes in iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes
  • Analyze experimental and sequencing data, and interpret results
  • Updates records and log books and assists in maintaining lab records and inventory
  • Assist in lab management functions including ordering reagents, organizing laboratory inventory

What you will need:

  • Associate's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience
  • BA/BS in Biological sciences and at least 6 months practical experience in a research laboratory (preferred)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to multitask
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team setting.

What is preferred:

  • iPSC or cell culture
  • Flow cytometry
  • Molecular biology skills such as PCR, western blotting, RT-qPCR
  • Lab management (ordering, restocking, database maintenance)

What is nice to have:

  • R or python programming (or equivalent)
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing, eg RNA-seq, ChIP-seq
  • CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, ImageJ Fiji, Photoshop and Illustrator
