Fayetteville State University, in partnership with the Mary S. Peake Fellowship, is energized to offer Summer internships for standout Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students to serve as Community Navigators, helping small businesses in our area improve their online presence. supporting community businesses. Students across all degree programs are invited to apply for this experience. Selected students will work closely with professionals at the Peake Fellowship as well as FSU faculty to
1. Perform desktop research and analysis on FSU-relevant businesses
2. Work directly with FSU community businesses to help them reduce their cybersecurity risk and increase their access to business growth opportunities.
In the process, students will earn micro-credentials in cybersecurity and data privacy best practices for small businesses based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). No prior IT or cybersecurity experience is needed. This nationally recognized NIST capability set will be useful for any career path.
Description of Work Continued:Background
Insufficient cybersecurity is a threat to businesses and organizations of all sizes—including Fayetteville State University. Knowledge about cybersecurity is now considered a valuable asset in almost every industry and profession. However, small and Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs), in particular, often lack the resources to identify and reduce cybersecurity risks that could bankrupt a business. For this reason, FSU is offering paid work experience to eligible students during which they will receive skills training in online research, coordinating business meetings, and providing consulting services to businesses to reduce the risks of cybersecurity exposure.
Community Navigators will:
○ Research businesses for multiple collaborative projects
○ Build descriptive pages for assigned organizations in a Wikipedia-like system
○ Identify opportunities for cyber-secure growth
○ Coach business owners and leaders on best practices for optimizing online presence and cybersecurity

About the Mary S. Peake Fellowship
Named after pioneering community leader and educator Mary S. Peake, the Peake Fellowship is a national Applied Learning & Teaching organization missioned to help recent college graduates, returning veterans, and military spouses develop next-generation leadership skills as they coach small & local businesses to succeed in a Networked AI (artificial intelligence) & Big Data-driven world. Across the country, small & local businesses regularly lose out to Networked AI & Big Data-powered global competitors who offer buyers more for less. To address this challenge, innovators from industry, the arts, public service, and education launched the Peake Fellowship for next-gen leaders helping local businesses grow.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:To be considered for the Community Navigator role, students must be rising seniors or rising juniors in good standing with the university in any degree program (select MBA students will also be eligible to apply).
Additional requirements:
Community Navigators are not permitted to do school work, additional jobs, or other unrelated activities during internship working hours.
Knowledge skills and abilities:• Demonstrate a commitment to the community and giving back
Preferred Qualifications:Be proficient or have a strong working knowledge navigating Google Workspace, Adobe Suite, internet browsers, keyboarding skills, etc.
