GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the building administrator and Library Media Specialist, this position assists in the implementation of the objectives of the school library/media center to enable students and faculty to take advantage of the materials and services available.

MAIN JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs duties to assure that library media center remains assessable to students and teachers

  • Assists the Librarian in overseeing the general neatness and attractiveness of the library/media center and its displays, including bulletin boards.
  • Assists the Librarian with monitoring the patrons of the library and their behavior in the library and the maintenance of patron and materials data base.
  • Assists the Librarian with various clerical, maintenance and accounting functions of the school library/media center to include shelving books and media, checking in deliveries of interlibrary loan materials, ordering, distribution, and returning of materials, the annual inventory of library materials, the preparation of lists of missing books and books to be discarded, processing of new materials and equipment, maintaining current inventory of supplies, and prepare new books for circulation (labels, stamps, Accelerated Reader codes, covers), and prepare current magazines and newspapers for routing, shelving, maintain any back issues, and keeps proper records of their receipt.
  • Performs circulation desk procedures, including checking in and checking out materials, registering patrons and collecting fines.
  • Assist patron with ready-reference questions and reader advisory, bibliographic instruction and database searching and helping library patrons locate appropriate information and/or materials.
  • Assists the Librarian with the Media Retrieval System and the appropriate recording keeping.
  • Provides assistance in the use of AV equipment and other technology.

Performs various support activities for the school, related to library services, as assigned by the Principal and the Librarian

  • Assists Librarian and Teachers with Accelerated Reader Program.
  • Collects and displays artwork for the County Art Festival on its scheduled weekend.
  • Coordinates with staff for the Dr. Seuss Celebration week.
  • Schedules guest readers from the community.
  • Schedules library field trips for all classes.
  • Trains staff and volunteers on laminator operation and general library tasks.
  • Assists with the training and supervision of volunteers and student aides.
  • Works with individuals and groups in the library/media center to carry out the instructional plans of the Librarian.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent.
  • One (1) year of work related experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is primarily inside, with moderate noise, temperatures that are controlled, and no exposure to chemicals or other negative air quality elements.
  • The work is light work, requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force to move or lift objects.
