SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Dean of Westhampton College, the Assistant Dean helps provide holistic student support in all areas of student life, including advising students in academic, co-curricular, personal, and other matters, helping to create a thriving and inclusive community in and out of the classroom. The Assistant Dean helps coordinate the College’s student life functions with responsibilities in individual and group advising, on-call duty and crisis management, conduct, College programming, communications, and participation in various campus-wide committees. The Assistant Dean works closely with the Dean and the Associate Deans in support of the College’s operation and administration of duties to achieve the College’s strategic goals. The Assistant Dean also collaborates with Richmond College and other campus partners, and liaises with several divisional offices, working together to help our students become the best versions of themselves.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Support Responsibilities:

  • Works as part of the Dean’s office team to provide essential services and support to students and other members of the University community, including maintaining regular office hours and sustaining a strong presence in the College and on campus.
  • Provides general advising and meets with students experiencing academic, personal, and/or health problems, including providing guidance on academic policies and procedures.
  • Provides support and advice to parents/guardians and concerned faculty and staff. 
  • Provides support and assistance as necessary in response to individual or campus crisis situations, including utilizing the risk rubric to determine level of student concern and serving on the Threat Assessment Team when needed.
  • Is one of three deans on call (17-18 of 52 weeks) to handle urgent and emergency situations after hours (including nights, weekends, and University holidays) for all ABJ students (both Colleges), working closely with the Area Coordinators.
  • Serves as a liaison to the Area Coordinators and Richmond College in matters related to on-call situations and student life, including providing support for Area Coordinators in on-call situations.
  • Serves as an Assistant University Conduct Officer with responsibility to assign charges of University standards, adjudicate administrative hearings, and impose appropriate sanctions.
  • With the other deans, serves as a co-advisor to the Westhampton College Government Association.
  • Works collaboratively with divisional and University partners to provide support to students with concerns involving sexual and relationship violence.
  • May provide academic advising and support to assigned first-year and sophomore undeclared students, including but not limited to academic performance, major declaration, course selection, and understanding general education and graduation requirements.
  • Stays informed regarding professional developments in student development fields, with a focus on Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, support for historically underrepresented populations, LGBTQ+ advocacy and support, social justice, and/or theories of inclusion, through conferences, research, and reading.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

College Programming, Communications, and Outreach:

  • Under the direction of the Dean, helps plan and implement current and new initiatives in support of the College’s mission, including events, campus conferences and speakers, and community-building and inclusion programming.
  • Assists and makes recommendations to the Dean for strategic planning in both long- and short-term goal setting, as well as communication and outreach initiatives.
  • Under the direction of the Dean, oversees, creates, and maintains the Westhampton College website.
  • Working with the other deans, responsible for the social media strategy for the College, including managing the College social media presence and social media campaigns; works with other content managers to integrate social media content, including campus-wide calendars and publicity.
  • Stays current with new knowledge and emerging trends related to college students’ social media consumption.
  • Liaises with University Communications, Office of Alumni & Career Services, and other divisional and University partners to achieve communication and outreach goals.
  • Co-manages the College’s programming budget; produces regular and ad hoc budget reports as required; provides budgetary statuses and recommendations to the Dean.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

University-Wide Responsibilities:

  • Teaches one section of WELL 100 each year.
  • Represents the College and division on University and professional committees, organizations, and associations; serves as the Dean of Westhampton College’s designee as needed; presenting at professional meetings and conferences as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with the Center for Student Involvement, International Education, Richmond College, the Student Center for Equity and Inclusion, and other divisional and University partners in the development of campus-wide programming.
  • In collaboration with divisional and University partners, plans, coordinates, and expands sexual and relationship violence awareness education and prevention campaigns.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Comprehensive knowledge in the areas of college student development theory and best practices in student affairs is required; training and experience in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and/or related fields is preferred.
  • Knowledge of applicable professional standards, policies, procedures, and legislation related to the areas of student life is required; related to conduct is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and advocate for students from diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences, both in curricular and co-curricular settings; knowledge of and experience in college DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) work.
  • Comprehensive experience and understanding of conflict management, problem solving, crisis management, supervision, time management, project management, and budget management is required.
  • Must be able to work collegially in a fast-paced, high-stress environment; demonstrated experience working in a dynamic, team-oriented, and collaborative environment is required.
  • Ability to work under pressure and within prescribed timelines while contributing to a positive, student-centered, supportive environment.
  • Proven ability to lead and demonstrated excellence in decision-making and judgment in routine and crisis situations.
  • Ability to thrive and manage effectively multiple tasks, deadlines, and priorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills are required; demonstrated program planning and presentation skills are highly desired.
  • Computer literacy, including word processing, spreadsheet, email/calendar software, and web-based applications, is required; understanding of current social media platforms used by college students is required; general knowledge of or experience with Microsoft Office, Banner/BannerWeb, and Maxient, is desired.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • A master’s degree in higher education administration or related field is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience in Student Development at the college level is required, with progressive responsibilities; experience with student conduct is desired.

WORK HOURS:

  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week
  • Availability for evening and weekend activities/meetings is required; must be available for on-call duties on assigned weeks, including the weekend

SALARY STRUCTURE:

Pay Grade 6 (Hiring Range $46,114.00 to $61,110.00 annually)
