Job Summary

The “Part-Time Reader” will read and evaluate assigned applications for Georgia Tech’s Office of Undergraduate Admission. Part-time readers complete initial review of all first-year applicants. In some cases, part-time readers will be asked to assist with additional portions of first-year applicant review. Duties for part-time readers include the evaluation of admission applications and supporting materials. 

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -

Perform duties related to professional field assignment.

Job Duty 2 -

Participate in reviews for compliance with policy and governmental regulations in the field.

Job Duty 3 -

Provide input to department policies and procedures.

Job Duty 4 -

May provide input to and administer project timelines and budgets.

Job Duty 5 -

May interact with vendors regarding procurement and delivery issues.

Job Duty 6 -

Perform other duties as assigned

Responsibilities

Essential Functions 

  • Complete initial training and on-going training, as required 
  • Holistically evaluate applications for first-year admission and recommend decisions to help the Institute meet enrollment goals. 
  • Become adept at reviewing high school transcripts and high school profiles 
  • Evaluate personal essays and accompanying recommendation letters. 
  • Evaluate varied extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and work experiences. Assess the quality and depth of these experiences.¿ 
  • Appreciate the differences between applicants’ personal backgrounds (first generation, rural/urban, etc.) 
  • Understand the demands of a Georgia Tech education and understand the enrollment priorities of the Institute 
  • In some cases, learn about international credentials and a variety of international contexts and apply this information to the holistic application review process 
  • In some cases, work with the Office of Special Scholarships to evaluate possible scholarship candidates. 

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Experience

Up to two years of job related experience

  • Strong time management, organizational, and critical thinking skills, as well as independent initiative 
  • Attention to detail and ability to focus 
  • Ability to synthesize much information and recognize/distill critical information 
  • Commitment to confidentiality and discretion regarding Georgia Tech’s application review process and applicant information 
  • Proficiency with personal computer office applications, e-mail, and web-based communications and comfort learning new software platforms 
  • Access to home office space, personal computer, and reliable, secure, highspeed internet 
  • Reside within the US and hold US citizenship or Permanent Residency 
  • Successful completion of background check (required for final candidates) 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience reviewing high school or college admission files, resumes, or employment applications 
  • Experience with selective and holistic college admission 
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Suite including Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive and experience with enrollment management software platforms such as Technolutions Slate 
  • Experience reviewing international applicants, familiarity with international curricula and non-US based national curricula, or an eagerness to learn about and understand various educational systems around the world

Conflicts of Interest and Restrictions: 

Given the sensitive nature of the admission selection process and in order to avoid any potential conflicts of interest: 

  • Part-time readers may not be the parent, guardian, or immediate family member of a rising high school student who is planning to apply to college (to Georgia Tech or elsewhere). Exceptions can be made for part-time readers who have previously been employed within our office for at least one year. 
  • A part-time reader cannot be employed by another university, any high school, or any organization that provides college counseling support of any type, nor can they be employed independently in work that provides personal college counseling support of any type.
