SUMMARY

With over 150 employees located across the United States, UnidosUS is the largest Latino civil rights organization in the United States. UnidosUS pursues its mission through a unique combination of research, advocacy, programs, and a national network of over 300 community-based affiliate organizations operating across the country. As described in more detail below, this position is responsible for helping to lead and direct a complex and dynamic finance and accounting operation for UnidosUS and related entities, which consistently has over $200 million in total assets, including over $100 million in net assets and over $50 million in annual revenue and expenses comprising thousands of financial transactions.

The Senior Manager of Accounting and Compliance Services reports to the Senior Director of Accounting & Compliance Services and works closely with and is the designated back-up for the Assistant Controller. Success in this role requires demonstrated knowledge and experience in every aspect of nonprofit accounting, compliance, and reporting within a complex, fast-paced, and performance-driven organization and related entities. This position is an individual contributor who collaborates with employees at all levels throughout the entire organization and leads and manages special projects and recurring processes.

Major success factors include: 

  • The ability to manage, perform, and/or assist with (i) accounting, budgeting, and forecasting; (ii) component, cost center, net assets, and chart field design; (iii) internal and external reporting and analysis; (iv) audit coordination and management; (v) maintaining effective and cost-efficient internal controls; (vi) promoting financial stewardship; (vii) ensuring regulatory compliance; (viii) coordination of the month-and-year-end closing process and related account reconciliations; (ix) and other accounting and compliance activities.
  • The ability to serve as an accounting and financial advisor to employees throughout the organization; and to help promote continuous improvement designed to achieve more efficient and cost-effective accounting policies, procedures, processes, practices, and operations; to enhance compliance; and to promote more accurate transaction recording, reporting, and analysis.
  • The ability to help ensure each financial transaction is recorded and reported timely and in accordance with GAAP, Uniform Guidance, Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act, and other governing standards, principles, rules, and regulations, including those related to inbound and outbound grants, contributions, donations, pledges, in-kind gifts, exchange transactions, endowments, leasing transactions and much more.
  • The ability to adapt and pivot to change and collaborate with team members through the change management process; work independently; make data-driven and informed decisions and successfully communicate and implement those decisions; exercise good judgment, meet deadlines, and plan for projects; deconstruct and manage complex issues; promote and demonstrate cross-functional collaboration and teamwork; and manage complex and time sensitive work in a complex, fast-paced, and performance-driven organization. 

The position is hybrid and will be based in Washington, DC.

Salary: $127,114 - $141,177

Essential Functions

Strategy and Innovation Responsibilities

  • Serve as an accounting and financial advisor to help develop and implement creative, cost-effective, and impactful financial management strategies that align with the organization’s mission and vision and directly support the strategic goals, objectives, and priorities of the organization. 
  • Assist the Senior Director of Accounting & Compliance Services in leveraging best practices to guide strategic and cost-effective investments in financial management systems that enable employees to access, at their discretion, timely and accurate data and information to make informed decisions.

Accounting and Recording Responsibilities

  • Manage a timely, accurate, efficient, and effective monthly account closing process, including providing preliminary financial results within 10 days of month end; ensuring all major accounts are reconciled monthly; distributing monthly results to internal stakeholders within 15 days of month end; and driving continuous improvement. 
  • Manage the development of comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual work plans and calendars for the team’s accounting and compliance work, including ensuring all due dates are known and adhered to in a timely and accurate manner. 
  • Manage the successful documentation, implementation, and ongoing compliance of new accounting standards, Uniform Guidance, and best practices (e.g., new leasing & revenue standards), including teaching other team members the role that they play in adhering to these new standards. 
  • Manage the timely and accurate completion of monthly and year-end reconciliations of key accounts to ensure accuracy of the financial records, timely preparation and distribution of reports, and timely completion of the annual audit. 
  • Manage the timely and accurate preparation of standalone and consolidated financial statements and related footnote disclosures, including properly accounting for all eliminating entries. 
  • Serve as a back-up to the Assistant Controller regarding the timely and accurate governance, management, accounting, and reporting of the Unidos Investment Fund, including assisting the board in fulfilling its responsibilities; ensuring compliance with the investment policy; and monitoring the performance of the investment manager. 
  • Manage the design, documentation, and maintenance of proper internal controls and related accounting policies and procedures for (i) handling funds received and expended; (ii) generating accurate and timely financial reports; (iii) conducting the annual audit of the organization’s financial statements; (iv) maintaining inventory records of real and personal property and their whereabouts; (v) implementing and/or maintaining personnel, conflicts of interest and whistleblower policies; (vi) promoting compliance with laws, regulations, grants, contracts, and Uniform Guidance; and (vii) achieving effective and efficient operations.
  • Ensure each revenue and expense transaction is recorded and reported in accordance with GAAP, including those related to inbound and outbound grants, contributions, donations, pledges, in-kind gifts, exchange transactions, and contracts with conditions and restrictions; lease accounting transactions including lease right of use & liabilities, cash receipts and cash disbursements; endowments and quasi-endowments; and much more. 
  • Manage the development of the organization’s annual cost allocation plan and indirect cost rate proposal; and perform other duties and projects as assigned for all entities.

Audit and Compliance Responsibilities

  • Manage the annual financial statement audit, annual Uniform Guidance compliance audit, and other audits, including earning an unqualified audit opinion with no materials weaknesses or significant deficiencies in internal controls and no audit adjustments or findings. 
  • Manage the annual 401(k) compliance audit, employee benefit-related finance and compliance audits and reporting (i.e., Form 5500), and periodic grant compliance audits initiated by funders. 
  • Manage the creation and maintenance of a strong internal control environment that can be relied upon to help detect and prevent fraud, safeguard financial assets, and protect personal identifiable information (PII).

Budgeting, Forecasting, and Analysis Responsibilities

  • Manage the planning, coordination, and preparation of the annual enterprise-wide operating and capital budgets, including the cost allocation and indirect cost rate plan, and providing budget guidance, timeline, templates, and training. 
  • Manage the preparation of monthly financial and budget reports and related analysis of variances, with comparisons to the annual and YTD budget and to previous year’s results, including helping to ensure the projected change in net assets (with and without donor restrictions) will be in-line with the board-approved change in net assets, and to propose recommendations to achieve that desired outcome.
  • Manage the annual enterprise-wide mid-year budget review process, including providing applicable budget review guidance and tools, staff training and support, review and analysis, challenges, opportunities, and recommendations, and reporting of results.

Enterprise Reporting Responsibilities

  • Assist the Senior Director of Accounting & Compliance Services in his or her role as liaison to the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and Audit Committee, including preparing reports, presentations, and other materials and presenting those materials on an as needed basis. 
  • Manage enterprise-level financial reporting and analysis, including preparing and distributing timely and accurate enterprise-level budget vs actual reports and related variance explanations.
  • Manage the design, creation, and ongoing maintenance of enterprise-wide recording and reporting, including unique codes for natural revenue, expense, and net asset accounts and unique codes for components, cost centers, projects, grants and other designated financial buckets used to track and report revenues, expenses, assets, liabilities, net assets, releases of net assets, conditional and restricted grants and contributions, and other financial transactions.

Tax Compliance Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with external auditors, manage the timely and accurate preparation, review, and submission of IRS Form 990, including addressing any questions from the Audit Committee or Board of Directors. 
  • Manage the timely and accurate submission of all report filings due to federal, state, or local agencies, including real and personal property tax reports, sales and use tax exemption reports, and fundraising solicitation registration reports.

Real Estate Accounting and Reporting Responsibilities

  • Collaborates closely with the Deputy V/P of Unidos Properties and serve as the LLC’s Controller by leading, directing, and managing the timely and accurate budgeting, recording, reporting, analysis and audit support for all financial transactions related to Unidos Properties, including HQ building activities, leasing and property management support, tenant rent and operating expense and real estate tax billings and collections, operating expenses, capital improvements and repairs, mortgage payments, debt covenants, interest rate swap, preparing eliminating entries required for consolidation; and other matters; office lease agreements, facility use agreements and other arrangements related to procuring office, meeting, and event space in designated cities throughout the country; and compliance with numerous regulatory, licensing, and other government agencies. 

Investment Accounting and Reporting Responsibilities

  • Manage the timely and accurate budgeting, recording, reporting, analysis, and audit support for all financial transactions related to investments, including dividends and interest income; realized and unrealized gains and losses; endowment conditions and restrictions; compliance with the Uniform Management of Institutional Funds Act (UMIFA); creation and compliance with investment policies; calculation of debt covenants; oversight of investment manager; and supporting the oversight board in the execution of its responsibilities.

Support of Finance Component Team Members

  • In recognition of the key dependencies and points of integration between the numerous portfolios of work assigned to different team members across the finance component, the Senior Manager of Accounting and Compliance Services shall work collaboratively with the Senior Director of Accounting & Compliance Services, DVP of Finance, and other finance team members as appropriate to help ensure all finance and accounting functions and compliance-related obligations are fulfilled in a timely and accurate manner. 
  • Proactively teach and coach team members on new and existing accounting policies, procedures, and practices with the goal of helping to enhance their accounting and compliance acumen; elevate their performance; enhance compliance; and reinforce their value to the finance component and organization. 

Qualifications & Requirements 

Education and Experience 

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting and CPA license.
  • Minimum 10 years of non-profit accounting and compliance experience required, including federal and non-federal grant accounting and Uniform Guidance compliance, including direct experience leading financial statement and single audits.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience is required in a comparable manager role or higher level, with a non-profit organization including performing nonprofit accounting, compliance and reporting for complex, fast-paced, and performance-driven organizations.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience is required in performing the accounting and reporting for grants, contributions, pledges, and contracts containing complex conditions and restrictions, including cost recovery / expense reimbursement grants and endowments.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience is required preparing presentations, documents, and reports for the finance committee, audit committee, and board of directors.
  • Ability to travel as needed (less than 10%).
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the Latino community.
