Primary Responsibilities 

The Transportation Hydraulics Engineer is responsible to provide technical expertise and leadership support in project delivery, business development, and growth of HDR’s Transportation Hydraulics Group in the Minnesota/Wisconsin Region. Primary duties include:

  • Focus on hydraulics and hydrology modeling, transportation drainage system design, stormwater collection systems modeling, and report writing
  • Produce design calculations, draft technical reports and perform water resources studies
  • Oversight of technical project delivery
  • Oversight of subconsultant designs
  • Quality control
  • Junior staff development and mentoring
  • Business development and marketing support
  • Assist in developing and implementing strategies to grow the Transportation Hydraulics services through increasing market share with existing clients and diversification of the client base.
  • Serve as Project Manager / Hydraulics Lead on key projects and may lead and coordinate hydraulics services with other business groups within the North Central Region.
  • Promote HDR through active engagement in professional organizations to increase industry visibility throughout the region. Coordinate with project managers and area client managers and marketing staff to identify projects and contract opportunities with existing and new clients. 
  • Support projects through the Water Resources Business Group as requested. This support will focus on projects including flood control, river design, stream grade control structures, dike systems, levees, stream channel restoration/rehabilitation, wetland and lake restoration, watershed issues and non-point source loading and point source design.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Minnesota PE license required
  • 5 years experience including project/client management and experience related to transportation drainage engineering and permitting for transportation projects with emphasis on highway projects.
  • Technical proficiency preparing Hydrologic and Hydraulic analyses and reports, Erosion and Sediment Control Plans and reports, Drainage and Stormwater Management design, waterway and NPDES permitting, quantity & cost estimates, and specifications. Possesses expertise in erosion and sediment control criteria, stormwater management regulations and permitting processes in Minnesota.
  • MicroStation OpenRoads Designer and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D experience; Geopak Drainage, HYDROCAD and XPSWMM experience.
  • Successful project leadership experience is required. Strong leadership, planning, and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Project experience and existing relationships with MnDOT, County and municipal clients.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and with a project team to the completion of a task.
  • Desire to grow and expand skill set to grow capabilities as and individual and the team.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture.

  • Local candidates preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks or personnel
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well to clients 
  • Familiarity with agencies in Minnesota and/or Wisconsin is highly desired
  • Experience working and/or leading multi-disciplinary teams
