The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Public Affairs and Communications is comprised of several units that manage the public information functions of the Agency in New York City and its Watersheds. The Office of Education provides comprehensive, free educational programs and materials for youth and adults throughout New York City and the Watersheds.
Working under the supervision of the Director of Education, the Environmental Education Intern will research and create dynamic and engaging educational programs and resources for a diverse audience, including students and teachers, about the New York City water supply and wastewater treatment systems, stormwater management initiatives, sound and noise in the environment, and stewardship activities. The intern will help maintain existing, and create new, partnerships with community and education organizations and will act as a resource for DEP employees and for New Yorkers interested in learning more about New York City’s water resources and other environmental topics. Specific responsibilities include researching, developing, and implementing education programs in classrooms and at the Visitor Center at Newtown Creek; working with and supporting teachers and non-formal educators; collecting information and maintaining a database and archives of education outreach and activities; supporting programming at the Visitor Center at Newtown Creek; assisting with the Trout in the Classroom Program; assessing program impacts; suggesting new opportunities and ideas to communicate DEP’s mission; developing and enhancing print and digital curricular resources; helping to execute DEP’s Water Resources Art & Poetry contest; preparing written reports; and responding to telephone, email and written correspondence.
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
