Course Descriptions

VM131 Approaches in Media Studies

An interdependence between media theory and practice is explored through co-enrollment in Approaches to Media Studies and Foundations Practice. Approaches to Media Studies develops students’ critical thinking and writing skills about visual and media arts. Students learn to analyze visual and media art from both formal and contextual perspectives and articulate relational connections across cultures and disciplines. Work in this course helps students identify and critique structural power imbalances, and hegemonic cultural values and media practices. Foundations Practice allows students to explore and experiment with visual and media art production techniques and technologies within a critical framework. Effective project management skills are implemented to work through stages of the creative process as students produce work using tools while considering conceptual, ethical, and aesthetic decisions.

VM200 Media Criticism and Theory

Explores theoretical and critical approaches to the study of photography, film, television and video, audio, and digital culture. Theories and methods examine issues relating to production and authorship in the media arts, audience reception and effects, political ideology, ethics, aesthetics, cultural diversity, and schools of thought within the liberal arts. Extensive critical writing and reading in media criticism and theory.
