Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Ben Samuels Children’s Center (BSCC) Director, the Teacher, as a member of a trans-disciplinary team is responsible for the development and implementation of a developmentally appropriate educational program promoting social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth and development of the children served. The Teacher, as a member of this community contributes to providing a program that enables children with and without disabilities to learn, play and develop in an inclusive and nurturing environment of educators for children from birth through six. The Teacher also participates in the collaborative development, examination, implementation and evaluation of best teaching and learning practices.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Function as a member of a trans-disciplinary teaching team; share ideas and information with colleagues; participate in the University community of learners.
  • Plan, organize and implement curriculum and lesson plans based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, families, communities and curriculum goals and standards that stimulate and support children’s growth and development; provide opportunities for children to experiment and learn in a warm, safe, nurturing environment.
  • Maintain classroom and playgrounds in a neat, clean, safe, attractive manner, examine environment for any potential hazards; maintain proper condition of materials and equipment in classroom; maintain inventories of materials and complete materials requests.
  • Advise, instruct, organize, supervise, coach and mentor Teaching Assistants, Graduate Assistants, Student Staff and Volunteers assigned to the room; model appropriate professional behavior and interactions with children, family and other community members.
  • Create classroom community that is nurturing, caring, safe and conducive to learning for all members of the community; participate in inquiry, reflection, coaching and mentoring activities.
  • Demonstrate culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Model respect for individual differences, for multiple ways of knowing.
  • Participate in on-going professional development.
  • Maintain reports, charts, checklists, anecdotal records on children; determine and plan to meet the children’s individual and collective needs.
  • Provide children with the necessary physical care, such as feedings, toileting, washing, and other hygienic aspects and assists in teaching self-help skills.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with families; develop and maintain positive, respectful, open two-way communication with families about their children and the Center.
  • Strive to exemplify the dispositions, knowledge and skills reflected in the MSU Portrait of a Teacher.
  • Attend meetings, workshops or courses to maintain compliance with NJ in-service requirement.
  • Report any instances of suspected child abuse to DYFS, Center‘s Administrative team.
  • Maintain valid Infant/Child CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

REQUIRED: 

  • Possession of a valid New Jersey Teacher's Certificate (Standard, Emergency or Provisional Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing or Certificate of Eligibility) or Permanent Endorsement, issued by the Board of Examiners of the New Jersey Department of Education.
  • Knowledge of how children learn and develop and of Early Childhood Curriculum.
  • Ability to learn how to make adaptations and modifications to the curriculum, plans and schedules based on individual learning needs and differences.
  • Ability to use technology: various assessments platforms, communication portals; use of basic software and applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Possess the literacy skills associated with an educated person; speak and write English fluently and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to bend, squat, twist, run, sit/play on the floor and lift children up to 50 pounds if needed.

PREFERRED: 

  • Successful work history of at least three years as a teacher in a child care, preschool or primary classroom setting.
  • Knowledge of and an ability to implement the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the Children’s Center after a period of training.
  • Ability to successfully fulfill the job responsibilities in a creative, conscientious, dependable, collegial, reflective, nurturing style.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative, reflective practices and life-long learning.
  • NOTE: This is a civil service position. After successfully serving a 4-Month Working Test Period as required by the State of New Jersey, you will then be certified to your position, meaning you will attain a permanent status in this title.

Salary Range: P21: $60,062.18 - $85,033.04 *NOTE: Salaries for internal candidates are determined by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission's formula. Salaries for external candidates are determined up to no more than $68,385.80
