With the changing regulatory landscape, especially around Environment, Social, and Governance (“ESG”) issues, RSM’s Risk Consulting practice helps our clients execute on their ESG strategic and operational mandates and prepare for incoming ESG regulations.

In the Risk Consulting practice, we frequently work as or alongside a client’s internal audit function, the risk management function, Sarbanes-Oxley project team, and various other members of management tasked with managing risk. Our advisors help our clients with identifying and prioritizing risk and leveraging process and controls to reduce risk exposure.

Key Responsibilities

Client Experience

  • Leverage understanding of ESG industry trends and regulations to propose dynamic solutions to complex ESG and climate risk management challenges, and related internal controls including data governance matters such as data reliability, completeness and accuracy, etc.
  • Responsible for enhancing our firms ESG risk methodology and delivering across various industry specializations with a national practice of middle market clients
  • Advise clients in the implementation of climate risk strategies, processes and frameworks such as the TCFD, SASB, GRI and others
  • Apply technical knowledge on disclosures required by laws and regulations, frameworks, and standards
  • Explain the business case and value of ESG risk management and internal controls to clients to both achieve compliance and create value
  • Participate in developing ESG and climate risk-related thought leadership to share with clients and broader market
  • Lead ESG and non-ESG risk assessment management interviews
  • Develop internal audit plans to prepare companies for ESG-related measurements and financial statement disclosures, in line with the regulatory expectations
  • Complete review of all project deliverables including process narratives/flowcharts, risks and control gaps, suggested remediation and process improvement
  • Lead account communication strategy and ensure adherence to the reporting protocol defined for each client
  • Maintain overall responsibility for engagement economics to account strategy or structure to improve financial performance
  • Demonstrate effective delegation strategies by managing multiple clients, projects, and teams simultaneously with the goal of overseeing a book of business
  • Own management level relationships and interact with C-suite group. Drive collaboration with external stakeholders

  • Work across consulting solution sets focused on ESG consulting, industry, and priority markets to build our emerging ESG practice in risk.
  • Participate in relevant industry associations and events to develop and/or maintain industry focus and relationships
  • Build, maintain, and utilize your internal network to address issues timely and add value to client relationships; begin cultivating an external network with the goal of generating new business opportunities for the firm
  • Contribute to thought leadership development and present at relevant internal and external industry events
  • Proactively utilize your network, knowledge about our firm, client/prospect, and industry to deepen existing relationships or form new ones
  • Assist in writing, developing and delivering thought leadership internally and externally
  • Communicate effectively with prospects, assess needs, and develop clear and accurate project parameters including scoping descriptions, delivery plans, and budgets
  • Contribute to pursuits through development of proposals and other materials

Position Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in business, accounting or related discipline
  • 8 years or more of risk management experience such as internal audit, related internal controls, or audit positions
  • A climate and sustainability certification relevant to risk management (GARP Sustainability and Climate Risk Certification or other)
  • Demonstrated experience within ESG / sustainability consulting and/or climate / GHG quantification and inventory development (carbon accounting, carbon measurement techniques and calculation methods for Scopes 1, 2 and 3 – including financed emissions and value chain assessment techniques and methods)
  • Significant experience advising on sustainability
  • Experience leading project based work with milestones and workflow driven by objectives and defined timelines
  • Proficiency in professional writing, spreadsheet, and presentation creation tools
  • Ability to travel to meet client needs and work collaboratively with others in-person and remotely
  • Openness to workday flexibility, agility, remote work environment, leveraging new tools
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills
  • Established experience in multiple industries or subject-matter expertise in one specific industry
  • Demonstrated success in high pressure scenarios

Desired Expertise

  • Financial reporting under US GAAP or IFRS
  • Experience working with and leading ESG frameworks and standards (SASB, GRI, TCFD, etc.)
  • Knowledge of carbon accounting standards (ISO 14064 and GHG Protocol)
  • An ability to explain complex topics (climate change, economics) clearly to non-technical professionals and apply technical concepts and techniques to real world situation

Compensation Range: $140,400 - $299,000
