JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction from the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach helps develop strategies for developing and maintaining large and / or highly visible intercollegiate sports programs. Responsible for overseeing specific aspects of the sports program including, but not limited to, planning and execution of practice and games, opponent scouts / film breakdown, on- and off-campus recruiting, conditioning programs, fundraising events, and various administrative duties for team travel. Must be attentive to detail; keep accurate records; and possess an ability to work with a diverse constituency, including but not limited to students, parents, coaches, faculty, staff, administrators, prospective students, and other outside contacts. Must foster an environment of NCAA compliance. May provide guidance to other personnel. Assumes head coach responsibilities, as needed. Additionally, staff are expected to embrace the NCAA DIII philosophy and UCSC Principles of Community. The Assistant Coach reports directly to the Head Coach. Work schedule often includes: evenings, weekends, and holidays.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: Salary By Agreement $33,711 - $35,262 annually or $2,809 - $2,939 monthly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

75% 

  • Under guidance of the Head Coach, develops technical aspects of player coaching.
  • Analyzes performance and instructs participants in program strategies and techniques to prepare them for competition. Observes players while they perform to determine the need for individual or team improvement and participates in student athlete performance.
  • Ensures adherence to all governing rules, university, department, conference, NCAA policies and procedures and NCAA compliance. Represents and promotes professional conduct, university good will and high standards at all events and matches and may assist in coaching at competitive events.
  • May assist in most practice and conditioning sessions.

15% 

  • May assist in the recruitment of prospective athletes within the framework of the university, department, conference and current D3 bylaws and manual.
  • May participate in on and off campus recruiting and managing SPRY and recruit documentation

10% 

  • May participate in fundraising activities for the program and department including camps and clinics

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with athletic participants, staff, and parents of student athletes.
  • Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Knowledge of the team sport or activity, as well as basic technical expertise in coaching principles.
  • Leadership skills to mentor and develop student-athletes, assistant coaching or program instruction staff and skills in effective assistant coaching.
  • Proven ability to teach specified sport to individuals and the team as a whole. Personal experience with specified sport.
  • Superior organizational skills required in order to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, verbal / written / social media vital to dealing with our players and staff, as well as within the larger department, with alumni, and recruits and their families.
  • Ability to communicate effectively for live media presentations.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making and be an effective problem solver.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applied knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and basic computer skills.
  • Working knowledge of Hudl and Front Rush.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Must possess NCAA Coaches Certification (Recruiting) or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
  • Ability to travel nationally.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
