Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The School of Communication and Media and the Department of Spanish and Latino Studies at Montclair State University invites applications for a clinical specialist (non-tenure track teaching professor) in Spanish Language Journalism. This position will support the University’s commitment to preparing students for professional journalism careers serving Hispanic and Spanish speaking communities. This interdisciplinary faculty member will be housed both in the School of Communication and Media’s journalism program and the Department of Spanish and Latino Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, helping to lead and grow a collaborative new certificate program in Spanish Language Journalism. Teaching assignments will include courses from both units, including Reportando las Noticias, a newly created Spanish language newscast course (Montclair NewsLab en Español) which will produce news broadcasts for distribution on the University’s Hawk+ streaming platform, and possible courses in Hispanic culture based on the candidate’s area of expertise. This may include coursework related to the candidate’s cultural experiences as a professional journalist. Candidates should have a strong professional work history in Spanish language journalism. Of particular interest are candidates who have professional experience in Spanish language television and broadcast news and are excited for the future of this evolving discipline. Candidates must be fluent (both oral and written) in Spanish. Faculty are expected to contribute to the curricular and co-curricular life of the University, including support for student news broadcasts and campus events. This faculty member will have the unique opportunity to continue to leverage and grow the University’s partnerships with a range of news organizations that serve a diverse public, including membership in the NBCU Academy program, a partnership with WNBC/WNJU, and recruiting and content partnerships with a broad range of local and national news organizations. This is a 10-month, renewable position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Significant professional experience as a professional Spanish language journalist in broadcast or digital journalism. Experience as a producer is appreciated (or eagerness to grow in that capacity). Must be fluent in oral and written English and Spanish. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree (ideally in either journalism/communication or Spanish) and previous college teaching experience.

THE SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA:

Founded in 2012, the School of Communication and Media offers a range of dynamic programs in communication and media to a talented and diverse student population of over 1,800. Offering degrees in film and television, social media and public relations, advertising, journalism and digital media, sports communication, animation and visual effects, and an MA in public and organizational relations, the School prepares the next generation of communication and media practitioners and leaders. It maintains several critical strategic partnerships, including membership in NBCU Academy and the summer residency program for Ghetto Film School. The School houses award-winning student programs that include WMSC Radio, The Montclarion newspaper, Hawk Communications PR Agency, the Red Hawk Sports Network, Hawk+ OTT streaming platform, a newly launched Los Angeles residential program, and News Lab, as well as the Joetta Di Bella and Fred C. Sautter III Center for Strategic Communication and the Center for Cooperative Media, the latter of which serves the public by working to grow and strengthen local and collaborative journalism. Recent national recognitions for the School include an Edward R. Murrow Award, several Marconi Award nominations, and a College Television Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

THE DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH AND LATINO STUDIES:

The Department of Spanish and Latino Studies offers a variety of programs characterized by academic rigor, diverse cultural perspectives, innovative and appropriate uses of technology, and attention to the latest theories of language learning and approaches to Spanish, Latin American, and Caribbean literature, translation and interpreting, cultural studies, accessibility, linguistics, and pedagogy. The Department offers students enriching cultural and social activities that foster a sense of community and belonging. As a Hispanic-serving institution, the Department is home to a large population of heritage and native speakers of Spanish with course offerings that accommodate different proficiency levels and interests, such as Spanish for Heath Practitioners, Spanish for Law Enforcement, and Spanish for Business. The Department also provides opportunities for participation in community-oriented projects that serve the Spanish-speaking community in NY and NJ. Housed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department shares the College’s mission of engaging students in reading, writing, research, and analytical thinking that prepare them for success in many areas of work and in post-baccalaureate study as well as interdisciplinary studies and learning beyond the classroom through internships, community engagement, and study abroad opportunities.

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with experience
