Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of the Student Health Center, the Summer Camp Nurse serves as a medication administrator for all University’s internally hosted summer camps. The Summer Camp Nurse properly stores and administers medication (when the parent or the participant cannot self-administer required medications) to minors, and provides first aid and medical treatment to the University’s summer camps participants. The Summer Camp Nurse is responsible for collecting and retaining participants’ immunization attestation, health history records, authorization for emergency medical treatment, instructions for medical administration, and release of medical information. The time frame for this position is from June 1 through August 9 (Sunday nights through Thursdays until 9pm). Some weekends required from July 7 through July 17. Two-three 24 hours/7-day shifts.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Independently and accurately collect health information, review past medical history, collect and retain minor’s immunization records, authorization for emergency medical treatment, and instructions for medication administration. Recognize minors’ normal and abnormal signs and symptoms, assess, plan care, and document using SOAP format.
  • Administer prescribed medications to minors, and in accordance with NP medical orders and/or predetermined protocols. Complete the related electronic processes.
  • Ensure the minor’s parent or legal guardian has provided the minor’s medicine in its original container or prescription container and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Store medication in a secure, locked location that complies with the medication’s specific storage guidelines and is inaccessible to minors.
  • Meet with minor and trained adult/assistant at the appropriate time to observe the minor self-administer in accordance with the dose as shown on the container. If the minor cannot self-administer the medication, the medical administrator may administer the medication in the presence of the trained adult/assistant.
  • Return unused medication to the minor’s parent or legal guardian within 3 working days after the minor’s last day, or destroy any remaining medication that cannot be returned.
  • Maintain a fully-stocked first aid kit at the program location.
  • Document nursing actions, communications, and update medical records at each encounter.
  • Perform minor first aid based on procedures and protocols of the Student Health Center.
  • Effectively and appropriately triage participant emergencies. Refer patients as needed for emergency medical care.
  • Execute nurse practitioner and M.D. orders as per the Nurse Practice Act of the State of NJ.
  • Learn and integrate new procedures, tools, and technology as needed for role.
  • Monitor medical supply needs on a weekly basis and communicate as needed.
  • Monitor stored medication for expiration. Dispose and requested from parents as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of medical information per HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
