Position Summary:

This posting seeks a highly motivated and exceptional senior statistician to join the recently launched Texas Epidemic Public Health Institute (TEPHI) Wastewater Consortium (TWC), a growing network of epidemiologists, statisticians, molecular scientists, and public health experts tasked with establishing a statewide system to monitor and respond to pathogens of pandemic potential (PPPs). Established by the 87th Texas Legislature (2021), TEPHI is an agency associated with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) that will leverage robust capabilities of Texas’ largest school of public health and its six campuses located throughout the state in Austin, Brownsville, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio TEPHI to:

  • Create a trained multi-sector public health reserve of at least 3,100 members across the state.
  • Establish a reliable and secure data analysis infrastructure reinforced by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
  • Create a laboratory testing network to monitor for emerging infectious agents beyond COVID-19.
  • Develop new and operationalize current “work and learn safe” protocols for small and rural businesses, schools, and essential food production.

The Biostatistician hired into this role will be primarily responsible for providing Biostatistical and data science support to the TEPHI TWC. This includes designing statistically valid research studies, conducting advanced statistical analyses, and preparing statistical and data analysis reports that aim to forecast and predict future pandemic events from real-time monitoring efforts. This is a chance to join a highly dynamic, creative, and motivated scientists at the forefront of pathogen detection methods and technologies to establish paradigm-changing research that aims to prevent the next global and state-wide pandemic. The position will be housed in the Center for Spatial-Temporal Modeling for Applications in Population Sciences (CSMAPS) in UTHealth School of Public Health.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Support data management and database maintenance for operational and research projects or efforts.
  • Develop valid research study designs, study protocols, and routine reporting.
  • Perform advanced statistical models including but not limited to linear regression models, generalized linear regression models, trend analyses and/or spatial/temporal analysis.
  • Perform statistical analysis using R programming.
  • Develop and present findings resulting from statistical models and analyses, including summary tables, graphs and charts, for routing report or scientific reporting in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Develop survey methodologies and questionnaires using acceptable scientific practices.
  • Present results to appropriate institutional committees and groups.
  • Perform literature review and support writing manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Demonstrates proficiency with statistical methods and applications in clinical research.
  • Experience in data analysis of large administrative datasets (claims, registries, EMR) and observational studies. 

Preferred:

  • Advanced statistical analytical skills
  • Advanced statistical programming/coding skills
  • Research study design skills
  • Experience with data visualization dashboard development, preferably with R Shiny.
  • SAS experienced preferred.

Minimum Education:

  • Master’s degree in related health science.

Minimum Experience:

  • Two years of statistician experience.
  • Experience working with R Language is highly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
