POSITION DETAILS

Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty-five colleges within the dynamic City University New York (CUNY) System. Named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education.

Reporting to the Provost & Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Assistant Vice President for Information Technology/Chief Information Officer (AVP-IT/CIO) provides leadership and management for the College's department of Information Technology which includes employees assigned to the following service areas: instructional technology services; administrative computing services; telecommunications and network services. 

The AVP-IT/CIO establishes standards and manages the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the exchange of information and assure appropriate security, connectivity, and interoperability for all centralized IT operations including, but not limited to: email, the Internet, and all centralized academic and administrative hardware, software, and telecommunication systems. The AVP-IT/CIO also establishes and maintains standards for Local Area Networks (LAN) and the LAN backbone, and oversees and coordinates operations in support of distance learning.

Additionally, the AVP-IT/CIO is responsible for managing the innovation process inside MEC that identifies strategies, business opportunities and new technologies and then develops new capabilities and architectures with partners, new business models and new industry structures to serve those opportunities. S/he will focus on delivering on the key principles behind innovation-leadership, creating networks, leveraging the right incentives, and building/running an effective, transparent, and efficient IT innovation process.

The AVP-IT/CIO is expected to support teaching, learning and research at the College, while ensuring data integrity that facilitates assessment, continuous improvement, and advance the culture of accountability. The university is migrating to Oracle/PeopleSoft, and the AVP-IT/CIO will be an important part of the MEC team, providing leadership for information technology resources and services in support of the College's academic mission and ensuring financial and operational strength and sustainability. In particular, s/he is responsible for researching, recommending, and implementing emerging technologies and creating an expanded environment that inspires teaching, learning, research and support. The AVP-IT/CIO is a key member of the College's Technology Advisory Committee (TAC), comprised of administration, faculty and students, which will provide strategic and policy guidance regarding technology services. The AVP-IT/CIO will also administer and manage the Student Technology Fee program that supports improvements to student technology services, and participates as required, in University technology enterprise planning activities.

The AVP-IT/CIO is the chief strategist and visionary for IT planning and implementation for the College. Managing the daily operations of the information technology resources, setting direction for personnel, communicating technology solutions in a collaborative and proactive style and providing quality service to end-users are all part of this mandate. The AVP-IT/CIO plays a major leadership role in organizing, managing and strengthening a comprehensive information technology infrastructure that will support and transform the administrative and instructional areas of the College, support the academic mission, lead innovation, and build strong relationships for its constituents and wide-ranging communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate should have broad managerial experience, including a minimum of eight years of executive level responsibility for supporting the technology -related requirements of complex academic, private sector, public sector or non -profit environments as well as responsibility for technical implementation, management and strategy and program leadership. An advanced degree, preferably in business administration, public administration information technology or a related field preferred.

The successful candidate is a strategist with strong management, operational and planning experience and a proven track record of accomplishments in complex environments, infrastructure development and systems implementation. Proven track record of fostering collaboration and lasting partnerships highly preferred

The candidate must possess the ability to work effectively in a coordinating role across multiple constituencies; a strong, open and collaborative leadership style; a customer-service orientation with a focus on excellence; outstanding communication skills; and experience managing contracts with IT hardware, software and telecommunication vendors. Experience and demonstrated competence in working with learning management/online platforms highly preferred. Knowledge of use, implementation and best practices for instructional technologies required. Experience with theories of learning and curricular design, and innovative teaching approaches required.

The successful candidate will have scholarly publications on topics related to one or more of the following areas: instructional development, online educations, the scholarship of teaching and learning, learning analytics, or measurement and evaluation of instructional activities.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$145,000 - $157,000

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
