JOB DESCRIPTION

Providence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional MIDDLE SCHOOL INSTRUCTIONAL COACH-GENERALIST who is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of teachers, students and stakeholders. We serve approximately 22,000 students at 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. REPORTS TO: Principal

The instructional coach maintains a positive, caring, and supportive learning culture and environment for the diverse student population of PPSD. As part of the leadership team, the coach helps foster a professional learning community focused on analyzing student data to inform the instructional priority and/or school improvement plan. Additionally, they will be required to provide teachers with support through coaching, observation, and feedback, as well as build the capacity of teachers to improve student outcomes. The instructional coach-generalist supports teachers with the implementation of high-quality instructional strategies aligned to CCSS(ELA and Math), WIDA, TESOL and/or SLA, with a focus on supporting all students academically, linguistically and social emotionally. 

Salary note: this position contains 5 extra days

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university required; Master’s degree is preferred.

Three years of experience in classroom teaching is required. Related management, supervisory experience, and educational leadership experience are preferred.

Multilingual candidate preferred

RIDE Certification Requirements:

At least one of the following:

  • Elementary Education Teacher, Grades 1-6 (with experience as a middle school teacher) or
  • Middle Grades English Teacher, Grades 5-8 or
  • Middle Grades Math Teacher, Grades 5-8 or 
  • Secondary Grades English Teacher, Grades 7-12 or
  • Secondary Grades Math Teacher, Grades 7-12

AND

  • All Grades English to Speakers of Other Languages Teacher, Grades PK-12 or
  • Middle Grades Bilingual and Dual Language Education Teacher, Grades 5-8

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES

Instructional Leadership

  1. Demonstrate and employ a strong working knowledge of Literacy, Math, CCSS, WIDA, TESOL and/ or Spanish Language Arts standards and best practices, use of materials, and specific instructional topics across content areas.
  2. Maintain a weekly schedule that prioritizes coaching in classrooms, collaborative planning sessions (PLC/CPT), and all other duties that align with the instructional priority/school improvement plans and administrative expectations.
  3. Establish and sustain effective progress monitoring systems, consistently analyzing data to inform and guide instructional leadership decisions.
  4. Engage in a non-evaluative cycle of coaching with teachers to include observation of practice and feedback for continued growth.
  5. Assist teachers in organizing classrooms with an instructional focus for literacy, math, and MLL instruction.
  6. Develop and conduct professional development for targeted audiences, including classroom teachers, in the content area of English Language Arts, Math and English Language Development, as well as supporting reading instruction through other content areas. 
  7. Conduct data conferences with classroom teachers to interpret data and plan instruction, and assists teachers in using assessment data to plan appropriate instruction.
  8. Provide targeted instruction to small groups of students. 
  9. Develop expertise by participating in district initiatives on leadership and coaching development and training, including the recording and analysis of professional practice and coaching sessions.
  10. Attend regularly scheduled coach meetings and professional learning experiences (PLE) during the school year and in the summer.
  11. Continue to develop professional expertise through professional learning experiences, readings, training, and conferences.

Management of Multilingual Learner Programs and Needs

  1. Ensure that state and national education policies and regulations are implemented and in compliance to ensure that students' civil rights are properly maintained.
  2. Work with the school principal to ensure that school policies and procedures for holding all students to high academic, linguistic and behavioral expectations are understood and promoted with consistency across all staff.
  3. Work collaboratively with the district leaders to meet the needs of MLLs.
  4. Work collaboratively with the School’s Evaluation Team/Special Education staff to meet the needs of all students with specialized learning needs, including dually identified students. 
  5. Serve as a point person for meeting with families upon enrolling, properly scheduling (Assigning ELD course codes in Skyward) and transitioning MLLs to the school’s program as well as planning for and implementing MLL parent engagement programs.
  6. Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records to provide teachers with the most important data and background information needed to successfully meet their unique needs as well as to parents to keep them up-to-date on their child’s progress in acquiring language and academic content.
  7. Provide coaching and professional development to educators on Sheltered Content Instruction strategies to help make core content accessible to MLLs of varying English proficiency levels 

Oversight of Common Spaces/Communication

  1. Maintain a professional library and resources, as well as space for teachers to plan and collaborate together.
  2. Perform any other related duties as assigned.
