A Brief Overview

The Nurse Manager - Transplant Program is accountable for supervising and managing one or more organ (heart, lung, heart-lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, small intestine, and multi-organ), blood and marrow (BMT), or stem cell transplantation programs, including health care providers and support staff, to ensure optimal quality, productivity, cost, growth and service/outcomes. The Nurse Manager works with the transplant physician leadership and the Administrative Director, in collaboration with Patient Care Services to assure patient safety, quality oversight, program development and growth in accordance with the goals and objectives of the department.

What you will do

  • Advises higher-level management in a timely manner of sensitive issues, including, but not limited to: patient care, compliance, staffing needs, supplies, and equipment, etc.
  • Assists the physician leadership and Administrative Director to 1) recognize and capitalize on new unforeseen opportunities, 2) help recognize and identify new unforeseen threats to patient safety, quality or program development and 3) help develop strategies for rapid response to both opportunities and threats.
  • Assumes twenty four (24) hour responsibility and accountability for the operation of the assigned program service(s), staff, and facilities.
  • Assures patient safety and QA especially in the development of the Living Donor Program (kidney and liver only). Establish QA metrics and foci for CQI
  • Clinical Practice: Provides nursing care for patients before and after organ transplantation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. May assume responsibility for a caseload that may include the more unusual and/or complex cases.
  • Creates and encourages participation in programs for continuing education regarding state of the art practice.
  • Provides mentorship regarding best practices and future patient care initiatives and serves as an excellent professional role model. Promotes nurse attendance and active participation at national and international meetings and encourage the creation of peer-reviewed manuscripts regarding all issues of nurse coordination. This should include assuring that all coordinators have certification through NATCO.
  • Ensures compliance with state and federal laws, regulations and standards as well as the requirements of accrediting organizations (i.e. Joint Commission, UNOS, CMS and CTDN). This will include direct managerial responsibility of the coordinators,support staff and matrix management responsibilities with the managers of the OR, ICU, and inpatient floors.
  • Fiscal/Revenue Management: Works with staff and other departments in providing clinical information for contracting proposals and negotiations, RFI's. Ensures appropriate staffing levels are maintained 24 hours per day, 365 days per year to meet program needs, assuring employee and patient safety; manages workflow, processes and patient care delivery in a cost-effective and efficient manner. Works with the
  • Associate Director and Administrative Director in planning operating and capital budgets and managing unfavorable variances.
  • Manage Organizational Change: Recognizes and manages the impact of stress and burn-out on organizational effectiveness; plans approaches to help staff handle stress. Works collaboratively to guide and influence the course of change to achieve institutional/departmental priorities while maintaining staff morale.
  • Communicates effectively to maintain positive working relationships and achieve desired outcomes with physicians, staff, patients, hospital departments and various internal/external stakeholders.
  • Organ Procurement Organizations; to assure a smooth liaison with California Donor Transplant Network (CTDN) and other OPOs across the state and nationwide. Personal involvement with CTDN administrative hierarchy as necessary.
  • Provides leadership and direction for the staff in the program while supporting and actualizing the goals of the department, division, service, and hospital; directs the personnel management of the employees assigned to the program(s)/project(s) consistent with state and federal labor laws, collective bargaining agreements, and nursing service and hospital philosophy, goals and policy; quality of work reflects high professional and ethical standards. This will include direct managerial responsibility of the clinical nurse coordinators and matrix management responsibilities with the managers of the OR, ICUs and inpatient floors (adult and pediatrics). In this role the Nurse Manager must assure a quality continuum of care, effective communication and cross training of work responsibilities of all nurses involved in the care of the patients. Assures continuing nurse job satisfaction and fulfillment through the implementation of appropriate coordinator responsibilities and workload, good teamwork and great staff morale. There will be an expectation of high levels of retention and enhanced opportunity for recruitment.
  • Referring physicians: Assure prompt and appropriate communication with referring physicians to assure customer satisfaction. This may entail personal meetings and phone contact with the referring physicians throughout the state and region.
  • The Nurse Manager is expected to recruit and ensure that new staff is interviewed, hired, trained, oriented, and evaluated. Prepare and conduct employee performance appraisals. Participate in the decision making of transfers, promotions and other decisions affecting employee pay and status and documenting disciplinary actions and responding to grievances.
  • The Nurse Manager will assure a smooth work process from each patient's referral for evaluation to discharge from the program. The goal will be to maximize and optimize throughput and assure a seamless continuum between outpatient and inpatient settings. Part of assuring good work flow will be organizing and providing a clear job description for each nurse coordinator to best assure individual performance, team commitment and cooperation.
  • Works with physician leadership and allied nurse managers to create up-to-date policy and procedures on patient care, care maps and protocols. These should be available and maintained in an electronic format to insure wide spread availability and ease to update.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.

Experience Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.
  • 3 years of previous supervisory or managerial experience preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of transplantation programs in the area to which assigned.

Licenses and Certifications

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $83.89 - $111.16 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
