Posting Summary The Cooperman College Scholars Program (CCS Program), based in Newark, promotes college completion of underserved, but high achieving students attending Rutgers University-Newark.

One critical component for each Cooperman College freshmen is being mentored for two years by a full-time RU-N faculty or staff member.

The Cooperman Mentor will mentor up to 10 CCS freshmen throughout the 2024-25 academic year and may be re-appointed for a second year.

Key duties include:

Meet one-on-one with each Scholar bi-weekly.

  • Support Scholars on campus, motivate them towards graduation, and connect them to campus resources.
  • Stay in touch with the Cooperman College Scholar’s Director of College Success to update Cooperman on Scholars’ progress and challenges (approximately once a month).
  • Stay in touch with RU-N’s Cooperman Liaison, regarding CCS students who may need additional support services.

Meet Weekly as a group with your CCS Mentees.

  • Lead 90 minute cohort group meetings weekly to provide opportunities for Scholars to support one another as they transition to life on campus. Topics for the Weekly Group Meetings are created in consultation with other current RU-N Cooperman Mentors.
  • Ongoing Check-Ins with Associate Director of College Success.
  • First Year Mentors – Weekly check-Ins with Cooperman College Scholars to support Mentors (weekly for first six weeks, check-ins become bi-weekly afterward).
  • Second-Year Mentors: Initial check in at the launch of the semester, semester following the first add/drop period (first three weeks) with check ins once every 3 to 4 weeks through the remainder of the semester. Office hours will be available regularly as well.
  • Attend an Annual Kick-Off campus event scheduled, hosted, and facilitated by the

College to bring together all Cooperman College Scholars. Attendance is mandatory for First and Second year Scholars.

The Cooperman Mentor is also required to attend a two day training carried out by Cooperman College Scholars Program in Newark in August 2024.

Minimum Education and Experience 

Full-time Rutgers University-Newark Faculty or senior-level Administrators who have previous teaching and/or working experience with first-generation students, especially from Newark or Greater Newark.

Must have a Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree or Ph.D. strongly preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills a must.

Full-time Rutgers University-Newark Faculty or senior-level Administrator who are well acquainted with the range of resources available to students at RU-N, who are knowledgeable about RU-N’s undergraduate curricula, who can use their comprehensive institutional knowledge to help incoming Cooperman College Scholar freshmen succeed.

OverviewThe mission of Cooperman College Scholars is to help highly motivated, academically talented, under-represented students thrive in college. CCS places students in challenging, well-matched environments with solid support systems, and eliminate the pressures of insufficient financial aid which can negatively affect student retention and graduation. Selected Scholars participate in a three-week, pre-college program after 11th grade, taking courses with college faculty and living on campus. During senior year, Scholars have access to support for college admissions and the financial-aid process. Financial literacy education regarding college costs, loans, and scholarships is also be available to students and their families. Scholar support continues throughout college through participation in a cohort-based mentoring model facilitated by college faculty and student peers." (from the CoopermanScholars.org website.)
