Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an ambitious and innovative editor to oversee our NFL coverage. This is a crucial position that encompasses national coverage of America’s most popular sport and local coverage of the Washington Commanders as the team starts fresh with new ownership and a search for a new stadium.

We’re looking for an editor with a strong digital background who can help our coverage meet the moment with timely and impactful work that adds to the public conversation and answers audiences’ burning questions. The ideal candidate will need an understanding of how to make good stories great and how to tell stories in a variety of formats that are optimized for various platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Shape the NFL team’s coverage to go beyond the box score to reveal the tensions and personalities that shape the league while also explaining the seminal (and occasionally polarizing) cultural moments that go beyond sports.
  • Elevate stories to the highest standards, from conceptualization all the way through to publication. Ensure fairness, rigor, precision and excellence in story framing.
  • Mentor and steer reporters toward their best work.
  • Build partnerships with teams across the sports desk and newsroom to facilitate the most timely, comprehensive and visually dynamic coverage.
  • Optimize stories for digital success and embrace creative storytelling to identify the most compelling formats to engage our readers.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A track record of running distinctive breaking news and enterprise reporting.
  • Experience with major breaking news stories, pursuing accountability targets and developing new conceptual approaches to stories.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills.
  • A collaborative mindset and eagerness to experiment.
  • Supervisory experience is a plus but not required.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom.

Interested applicants should submit a résumé and a cover letter outlining their vision for the role to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by April 15 will be prioritized. Cover letters should be addressed to Deputy Sports Editor Matthew Rennie, Sports Editor Jason Murray and Managing Editor Scott Vance.
