Broader Strategic Leadership

  • General research-based solution architecture – determining requirements of scale, right-sizing, platform choice, data orchestration/movement, etc.
  • Communicate / interface with stakeholders, leadership, or researchers regarding RC services and features. Help rule some projects in/out.
  • Adopt and articulate a vision for cloud, cloud-like, and cloud-native design patterns. What should be offboarded to the cloud? What do cloud providers do that we should replicate?
  • Advise RC leadership on longer-term strategies and investments. Contribute to a vision for RC five years into the future, and longer vision for the University when possible.
  • Evangelize automation and code-based deployments. For everything. [Key litmus test: are humans shelling into machines to support deployments?]
  • Champion all efforts around data collection and analysis of data collected across all RC infrastructure and usage. Learn patterns, detect anomalies, with an eye toward anticipating issues.
  • Lead efforts and understanding around containerization and software deployment lifecycles. This includes an awareness of trends in development, workflows, and emerging platform features.

Technical / Tactical Group Leadership

  • Manage the DevOps and Solutions team including performance evaluations, human resource inquires and charting career development strategies. Communicate with Director of Infrastructure Services for Research computing about staffing needs and adjustments.
  • Lead technical efforts and vision around SSZ Kubernetes: (i) tooling; (ii) feature roadmap; (iii) documentation; (iv) training/samples around deployments. Seek ways to support HPC and HTC workflows through K8S.
  • Support research deployments and interface with US team to support training, troubleshooting, and documenting the inventory of applications.
  • Leverage the SSZ and HSZ K8S clusters to offer a (reasonable) set of other services useful to HPC and on their own: databases, secrets management, message queues. Look for future services/features to test or put on roadmap.
  • Design technical requirements for new HSZ Kubernetes to sit next to Neo: (i) tooling to match SSZ as possible; (ii) features unavailable in zone; (iii) automation-integration with Neo (Jack Van Horn group); (iv) deployment options within zone.
  • Lead technical efforts around the support of IVYWEB: (i) daily operations; (ii) future development.
  • Work with team to ensure continuous operations and research-appropriate levels of HA / DR for systems we touch. Planning of 1-3x annual rolling updates across clusters. Daily monitoring of outages or failures.
  • Support public-facing web resources, including RC websites, APIs, integrations – on-premises and AWS cloud services. Preserve public website functionality external to UVA outages and issues.
