Position Summary:

ASA’s Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), in conjunction with ASA’s CEO and physician leadership, leads the strategic planning process, advising and supporting the activities of the CEO, Administrative Council, Board of Directors, and ASA’s executive leadership team in establishing ASA’s Strategic Plan, and in supporting the execution of the broad organizational goals and strategic objectives as set forth in the Plan.

In addition to traditional CSO responsibilities, this position oversees revenue growth and diversification initiatives to drive organizational sustainability, new market development, and to broaden the Society’s beneficial impact on the specialty of anesthesiology. This position oversees ASA's Business Development efforts, including identifying, nurturing, and acquiring new customers and business opportunities that drive revenue and margin growth to enable ASA’s mission.

The CSO also oversees ASA’s Strategic Revenue Growth initiative and Project and Resource Prioritization activities with the goal of ensuring that ASA invests its resources in programs and projects that are in alignment with the organization’s strategy and mission.

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Strategy Division and translate the organization’s objectives and business strategies into operational plans as it relates to the aligned functions. Initiate and present solutions that will accomplish the goals and objectives for these functions.
  • Share knowledge and educate the organization’s elected leaders, members, and staff about ASA’s vision, strategy, opportunities, and challenges. Demonstrate and foster a business-minded approach to planning, budgeting, and execution.
  • In collaboration with ASA’s physician leaders, lead the strategic planning process to develop the 3-year strategic plan and the 1-year cyclical updates. Work across the organization to ensure divisional and departmental goals support the Strategic Plan, as necessary. Ensure alignment of department and business unit goals and strategies with larger organizational Strategic Plan.
  • Work with the CFO to ensure the necessary resources are budgeted and available to support the Strategic Plan and other critical activities.
  • Communicate the organization's strategic vision, progress, and accomplishments to internal and external stakeholders, including members, partners, and the broader health care community. Develop processes to provide the organization with frequent updates on progress of the Strategic Plan and other critical activities. Ensure successful execution of approved plans. Evaluate and report on the results.
  • Identify key priorities, growth opportunities, and strategic initiatives to drive innovation and enhance the Society's impact in the specialty and broader health care ecosystem. Monitor market trends, regulatory changes, and competitive landscapes to inform strategic decision-making and ensure the Society remains at the forefront of the industry.
  • Serve on the Strategic Revenue Growth (SRG) subcommittee and ensure execution of deliverables. Drive the establishment of products and services that provide strong non-dues, non-member revenue opportunities, with a focus on diversification of customers and generation of new products.
  • Ensure Business Development delivers on non-dues revenue goals. Current non-member audiences include industry/corporate, group practices, and hospital/health care institutions. Oversee revenue management from development through delivery of sales strategies, programs and services, and product development that provide unrestricted and restricted revenue for the Society.
  • Work with the CEO Team to establish an organization-wide methodology to evaluate and prioritize projects and initiatives. Evaluate and prioritize projects based on their potential impact, member/customer value, strategic alignment, and resource requirements. Implement and operationalize the resulting methodology to ensure the organization is working on the most important projects and executing with the required resources.
  • Drive organizational change initiatives to support the implementation of strategic priorities and enhance operational effectiveness. Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures of the organization that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the organization.
  • Serve as a strategic consultant and advisor to departments on all Strategy division matters. Establish credibility and provide advice and knowledge to others in the organization and to elected leadership, as appropriate. Work with departments across the organization to continuously assess their future strategic position and initiate formal future-visioning projects and departmental strategies, as necessary.
  • Direct and lead the responsibilities of the strategy division staff. Evaluate staff performance and oversee career development planning/initiatives.
  • Provide overall staffing and liaison services to assigned council, committees, and task forces in conjunction with the chairs of these organizational groups.
  • Participate in Administrative Council, Senior Team, and CEO Team meetings.
  • Assist Governance with Strategy Division report preparation and review for House of Delegates, Board of Directors, Administrative Council, Executive Committee, and other committees as needed.

Position Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree highly preferred, Bachelor’s degree required. CAE (Certified Association Executive) designation a plus.
  • Minimum of 15 years in progressively higher-level executive, strategic or operational positions in companies and/or associations.
  • Minimum 7 years Director experience including high level strategy experience with a history of driving organizational growth and impact.
  • Experience in non-profit, associations, or service industry a plus but not required.
  • Expertise in strategic planning, portfolio management, resource allocation, and change management within the healthcare or nonprofit sector.
  • Strong leadership, relationship building, influencing and negotiation skills, including the ability to work effectively across all levels of management and staff. Ability to marshal resources from across an enterprise to execute on responsibilities; must be comfortable and effective in situations where influence without direct authority is required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and other productivity focused tools.
  • Knowledge of business functions and how business decisions affect financial and non-financial work results. Expertise in negotiation techniques and fiscal management.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and demonstrated high level of confidence and poise with a strong service orientation. Assertive, ability to command credibility and influence across the organization.
  • Ability to analyze data, communicate with stakeholders, and develop recommendations for solving problems while exhibiting realistic understanding of issues.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, analyze, and capitalize on growth opportunities. Embrace rapid change and ambiguity.
  • Ability to think strategically and act tactically. Demonstrated ability to roll-up sleeves and work with team members in a hands-on management capacity.
