The Associate, Exhibit Planning is a role within the Operations and Experiences team focused on a transformational, multi-year initiative to re-imagine National Geographic Headquarters as a world-class public experience. Plans for the project include the design and development of an immersive media installation and theater, interactive experiences, a temporary exhibition, a photo gallery space, an education center, a library/archive, a restaurant, and retail. This role is also responsible for the fabrication and installation of temporary and traveling exhibitions at NG HQ and all partner venues.

This position supports the Director, Experiences Production and Fabrication on logistics, construction and installation of exhibitions. This position also supports the maintenance and proper working condition of exhibitory elements once installed. Technical Coordinator works directly with NG carpenters and painters, ensuring they have all necessary building and finishing materials, preparing and sizing material for assembly, and assisting with the construction process. This position also requires oversight and maintenance of the museum’s storage needs and assisting with the crating and shipping of NGS traveling exhibits. The position reports to the Director of Museum Operations but supports the needs of the entire exhibitions and experiences division.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include:

  • Support the operations and coordinate logistics of exhibit construction and installation. Evening/weekend and domestic travel may be required. (25%)
  • Work with vendors, subcontractors (internal and external) and security on the operations needs of the museum and other programming facilities. (25%)
  • Maintain museum storage areas and material supply racks (15%)
  • Maintain the functional status and aesthetic appearance of the museum gallery spaces and the condition of traveling exhibit components.(25%)
  • Assist with the coordination of crating and shipping of NGS and other exhibits. (10%)

Educational Background

High School with some trade experience or training

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

4+ years of experience in a related trade or job

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Good written and oral communications
  • Ability to effectively work with others
  • A strong aptitude for tools and standard construction practices
  • Familiarity with A/V, electronic and mechanical principles and techniques
  • Comfortable working at heights, either on a ladder or a mechanical lift
  • Comfortable working with heavy objects (ability to lift 50lbs)
  • Ability to operate a forklift
  • A basic computer fluency
  • Experience with museum standards and practices is helpful

Salary Information

National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar sized nonprofit organizations.

The pay hourly range for this position is $27.88- $33.17.

Pay offered to candidates will be based on several factors including but not limited to industry-based or other relevant work experience, education, skills, certifications, and training.

Job Designation

Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must always be onsite to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present some of the time. Some Resident staff may need to come into Base Camp every day, some may need to come in to meet looming deadlines and to get work done, and others may require a more unique schedule. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule can be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work. As a guideline, Resident staff will be in the office between 3-5 days a week.
