About the Role

FTCWatch is seeking a reporter in Washington, DC to cover the US Federal Trade Commission and its regulation of market competition and consumer protection.

The ideal candidate will have some experience covering Congress, the federal court system and state or federal agencies; and will have enthusiasm for partnering with other reporters. FTCWatch and its sister publication, MLex, are highly collaborative environments, and the reporter will work with reporters focused on similar topics in Washington and San Francisco, as well as internationally.

The job offers opportunities to break news on competition topics such as the regulation of mergers and enforcement of laws against monopolistic conduct. FTCWatch reports on topics related to consumer protection, such as false advertising and robocalls. An FTCWatch reporter also covers the personalities and conflicts within the agency, along with its interactions with Congress.

Responsibilities

  • Writing clear, well-organized news stories and analysis
  • Identifying current topics for articles/commentaries, including covering trials and similar scenarios
  • Coordinating with reporters and editors to develop coverage
  • Locating and organizing relevant information from public documents and other sources
  • Developing personality profiles and features.

Requirements

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or possess a legal background
  • Experience reporting and writing news
  • Have solid writing skills and a demonstrated ability to be proactive in shaping coverage
  • Be able to demonstrate great research skills
  • Possess the ability to provide analysis of events and documents, illuminating context and big picture trends
