Nidec is the world’s leading electric motor manufacturer and a true pioneer in electrification across a wide array of industries since its foundation in 1973, ranging from appliance, energy infrastructure, to ground transportation.

On June 18, 2023, Nidec Corporation, the world's leading comprehensive electric motor manufacturer, and Embraer, the third largest airplane manufacturer in the world, announced Nidec Aerospace LLC as a Joint Venture company, to develop Electric Propulsion Systems for the aerospace sector. This new company will leverage the technologies, processes, experience of Nidec and Embraer – two global industrial leaders which are both committed to decarbonization initiatives.

Purpose of the role

As Chief Operating Officer of Nidec Aerospace LLC, you will be responsible for building your team, defining and deploying new processes, setting up new lean manufacturing production facilities (which will need to become Aerospace certified) and drive product cost efficiencies and operational excellence. The COO will be responsible for Operations, Quality and Supply Chain / Procurement.

KEY RESULT AREAS

OUTPUTS

Build the Operations organization and set up production facility

  • Develop and enable the performance of the Operations, Quality and Supply Chain / Procurement functions
  • Research and identify the best production site for this joint venture.
  • Define make vs. buy strategy.
  • Estimate the total capital investment needed to start production and work with leadership team to obtain approval from the Board of Directors and parent companies.
  • Set up production site(s) and work with equipment vendors to have the production lines ready in time to start production.
  • Build aerospace supplier base with the support of Embraer and Nidec procurement teams.

Define and deploy operational process

  • Obtain AS9100 Aerospace certification for the plant, with the support of Embraer’s quality team.
  • Define lean manufacturing processes to make products at lowest cost, in time and with minimal waste.
  • Work with Embraer and Nidec to define and deploy the Supplier Quality Process.
  • Secure multi-year sales agreement with strategic suppliers
  • Draft and submit the annual budget for all reporting functional areas, including headcount and investment plans.
  • Work with the sales team to define and implement the S&OP process.
  • Liaise closely with Nidec Operations to select and deploy a production planning tool.
  • Define, deploy and drive compliance to the EHS policy with the support of the parent companies.

Product cost optimization and Operational excellence

  • Achieve company’s targets in terms of year on year cost improvement through productivity initiatives, material cost decreases and logistics optimizations.
  • Define KPI’s required to track the company’s performance in terms of PPM, Waste management, EHS and On-Time delivery, and develop plans to achieve the objectives.
  • Align with and support all New Product Development projects through driving on time delivery and lean manufacturing.
  • Drive optimal resource planning to ensure minimal over time and underutilization of direct labour

People Management

  • Implement robust performance management in all functional areas to create a high performance culture.
  • Ensure that a growth mindset is driven as a key value that drives the ongoing development of people in current and toward future roles.

  • Experience in ISO-9000 Quality Management Systems Requirements. Experience with AS9100 requirements is a plus.
  • Strong business and financial acumen
  • Possess strong process orientation and track record of reducing cost, improving profits and streamlining operations to achieve lasting financial improvements.
  • Extensive knowledge of S&OP processes
  • Experience with New Product Development processes, especially in terms of the role of Procurement, Quality and Production in reaching recurring and non-recurring cost targets, PPAP completion and on-time start of production.
  • Experience negotiating large and strategic contracts with suppliers.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time domestically and internationally.

PREFERRED:

  • Aerospace experience

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferably in supply chain, operations, electric, mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • MBA preferred.
  • 15 years of experience in operations or quality or engineering manufacturing, with at least 10 years at management level
  • Relevant experience with manufacturing, quality and supply chain for motor and/or power electronics operations
  • Six Sigma certification. Black Belt certification preferred.
  • English Fluent. Portuguese or Spanish is a plus
