Joining us as an Extra High Voltage (EHV) Design Assurance Engineer you will be responsible for the assurance of design on Critical National Infrastructure projects across the whole lifecycle from development through to delivery. As a key signatory for system design specifications, you will drive the design assurance on all aspects of network schemes between 400kV and 33kV, with emphasis on transmission level voltages from 132kV, working at the heart of National Grid Electricity Transmission’s Asset Management and Engineering department in Asset Operations to meet the aspirations of Net Zero and the delivery of the Great Grid Upgrade.

Location - We're flexible you can be based in anywhere in England or Wales (Hybrid working)

You’ll be responsible for the technical design assurance of new and replacement transmission infrastructure equipment for the specific high voltage discipline of Substation HV Plant Design Assurance. Reviewing but not limited to areas like equipment layouts, earthing, maintenance access and interlocking; seamlessly integrating High Voltage Plant into the Electricity Transmission system.

What you'll be involved with

As a Design Assurance Engineer, you’ll be responsible for resolving complex issues, agreeing technical variations, advising and engaging with Project Managers, Operations Teams, Consultants and Development Teams. Essentially you will ensure the project is delivered to specification in accordance with National Grid processes and procedures that deliver the business’ regulatory, stakeholder and customer commitments.

As we progress towards Net Zero the need for major new infrastructure will increase across the Great Grid Upgrade, you’ll get to see the results of your work and play your part in helping the world tackle climate change.

  • Engineering technical advice and support to project teams
  • Support to development teams on project options analysis
  • Technical tender review as a client
  • Carry out Design Assurance activities by reviewing designs submitted by suppliers to ensure compliance with NGET specifications and procedures.
  • Evaluate efficiencies and non-standard technical solutions on a project-by-project basis
  • Work closely with colleagues, including the Innovation team, to identify and implement updates and changes to NGET specs and procedures.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to project commissioning teams.

What are the requirements?

  • STEM degree or equivalent with the ability to be a member of a professional body: 

For Substation HV Plant roles – Electrical & Electronic Engineering desirable but not essential depending on experience. 

  • Demonstrable knowledge of project-based engineering - Electrical.
  • Working knowledge of relevant national and international standards.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of CDM Regulations
  • Proven track record of delivering projects within timescales.
  • Using, interpreting, and writing technical specifications and policies
  • Enact an Application Engineer role, applying standards to ensure technical compliance.
  • Strong experience of managing multiple stakeholders / Projects.
  • Regulatory & Energy Industry Understanding.
  • Desirable: Member of a Professional body with the ability to become chartered
