Reporter, Sanitation and Parks
The WNYC and Gothamist newsroom is looking for a dynamic, enterprising reporter to cover New York City’s sanitation and parks departments – two agencies that New Yorker’s interact with daily that can greatly affect quality of life.
This reporter will be part of the NYC Accountability team, which covers our city’s agencies under the newsroom mission to Make New York work for New Yorkers. A successful candidate will know how to speak with and listen to agency officials and employees, residents and our readers to deliver sharp, fair and informative news on trash, recycling and compost collection, public spaces and pests. This reporter’s beat will also include covering the city’s aging public infrastructure, such as sewers and street space.
The reporter will be tasked with balancing daily news assignments with longer term enterprise and investigations that uncover ways everyday New Yorkers are underserved by the city’s built environment. This is a beat that requires curiosity, creativity and strong field reporting skills.
A strong candidate for this role will have demonstrated experience managing a beat, with a track record of covering breaking news and executing exclusive reporting that holds public officials to account.
The role will deliver content for both our digital audience on Gothamist and our broadcast listeners on WNYC. The capability to simultaneously work on both written reporting and audio scripts is essential.
A successful candidate will have experience collaborating as a part of a large newsroom, and be a self-starter who aggressively identifies story ideas and reporting plans.
