The Regulatory Investigations, Strategy, and Enforcement (RISE) paralegal is assigned to specific matters, clients, projects and/or attorneys. The RISE paralegal is a member of the RISE team in our Richmond office, reporting to the Legal Support Administrator, and has an annual billing component.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Research, investigate, analyze, and summarize facts and factual issues relevant to practice area.
  • Locate government contracts, orders, solicitations and other documents.
  • Assists with preparation and submission of filings.
  • Draft and prepare legal documents appropriate to practice area.
  • Perform paralegal duties and responsibilities as directed by group leader and other attorneys in assigned substantive practice group.
  • Perform all assignments in strict compliance with ethical guidelines governing the practice of law.
  • Take appropriate action to monitor and stay up to date on project developments, update team on changes and initiate action to ensure internal and client deadlines are met.
  • Maintain Active Project Tracker with updates on all filing and submission deadlines, current case status and developments, and advising the team on upcoming deliverables and deadlines.
  • Manage and track active case dockets on state public utilities commissions, administrative agencies case management systems.
  • Monitor and alert the team to significant decisions and announcements relevant to regulated industries.
  • Establish priorities and work concurrently on a variety of projects; communicate if unable to meet daily responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate good teamwork skills within and among practice groups, offices, and firm to facilitate efficient delivery of legal services.
  • Maintain the firm’s official file utilizing the document management system.
  • Track and record client-billable time and non-billable hours, meeting minimum billable hour requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to use sound judgment and good discretion.
  • Ability to provide quality client service to both internal and external clients effectively and professionally.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Able to receive and follow complex instructions.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to manage voluminous filings.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and develop skills.
  • Willingness and ability to accept changing assignments and priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent grammar, punctuation, and proofreading skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant database file management systems, such as iManage and a records management system.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Products (Excel, Outlook, Word).
  • Able to take initiative in accomplishing routine assignments with minimum supervision.
  • Knowledge and understanding of regulated utilities and their regulators.

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree; a combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position may be considered.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a litigation paralegal.
  • Experience with state corporation commission practice; public utility commission, public service commission, and state corporation commission
  • Demonstrated experience with federal, state, and local government contracting, including supporting formation, performance, and disputes.

Hiring Salary Range:

$60,000.00 - $80,000.00
