GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Massachusetts Host Microbiome Center (MHMC) and Crimson Core assists local investigators, clinical trials and industry projects studying effects of host-microbiome interactions and impact of the gut microflora on key processes including development of inflammatory bowel diseases, host immunity to infectious diseases, nutrition, and development of gastrointestinal cancers.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Under supervision, the position will manage metabolic and microbial colonization studies in pre-clinical animal models in the MHMC's gnotobiotic (germfree) and conventional mouse facility.

2. Work with the PI and research personnel to evaluate assigned project requests and develop study-specific timelines and plans to complete work.

3. Work with gnotobiotic husbandry staff to setup isolators, coordinate mouse transfers, and work with the collaborating indirect calorimetry core for metabolic cage studies on mice with defined microbiota and/or specific dietary interventions.

4. Process samples for microbiology and molecular work and data analysis.

5. Conduct culture of obligate anaeroboes under complex or defined media conditions for metabolic modeling studies, including with with MHMC microbiologists for experimental analyses conducted by gas chromatography (GC), or NMR.

6. All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree in a biomedical and/or quantitative science.
  • At least 1 year of prior work involving microbiology.
  • Able to perform mouse dissections and common procedures for inoculating mice with defined species of microbes
  • Must be well-versed in use of sterile technique and maintenance of sterile work areas.
  • Must have US citizenship or appropriate visa/work status for the US.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

1. Good organizational skills.

2. Motivated and able to master new techniques.

3. Able to work independently and as part of a team.

4. Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

5. Experience using Microsoft Excel and Word programs.

6. Experience using statistical programs such as R, Prism, SAS, or using Python or MatLAB.

6. Methodical recording of data and work performed.
